Chance me for NC State and Virginia Tech (applied EA) [NC resident, 3.56 GPA, 1310 SAT]

Hey all. Class of '24, going for either architecture at VT or civil engineering at State. My second choice for State is an undecided major. Here’s some basic facts:

  • White transgender male
  • Unweighted 3.56, weighted, 4.08
  • SAT: 1310 (didn’t take ACT)
  • Class rank: 290/767
  • Taken several AP courses, including calc, physics, US history, and lang
  • Taking AP world, lit, and stats this year
  • Resident of NC, two generations of alumni with State
  • Single-parent household, middle class (likely won’t get a lot of aid)
  • Leadership in a transgender student union, working part-time, was a part of speech and debate for two years

I’m more confident about my position with Tech, but it’s super expensive, so I’d love to have State as a possibility as well.

Have a good day!

If I had to guess, you won’t get into either. Sorry - but there are other schools you’d have a better shot - UTK for one and there are others depending on what you seek in a campus.

PS - if you’re concerned with cost at tech, then find schools within budget.

Best of luck.

Note that NCSU has competitive secondary admission for engineering majors.

Other NC publics with civil engineering are NC A&T and UNC Charlotte. These may be less difficult to get into.

NCSU also has a BArch program.

What’s your budget?

NCSU is a reach, especially for Engineering, with a 4.08 WGPA --the bottom 25% is at 4.25 I think… but your application is helped by AP Calc and AP Physics.

Seconding UNC Charlotte.
Other colleges for you to look into: UMass Lowell, UDel, Drexel, GMU, Shippensburg (safety), Temple, Lafayette (reach).
Apply Honors at all but Lafayette.
Run the NPC to make sure the college is affordable.

For architecture at VT, last year 241 white/male/OOS/non-international/non-URM/non-USS(i.e not Pell/Vet/1st gen) applied for architecture. 40 of those were made an offer, so 16.6%. It’s a tough admit, so I would encourage you to consider additional RD applications, just in case.

Priority deadline for UNC Charlotte architecture has passed, but it looks like they still accept applications after that date (I would get the application in ASAP, and it also is a tough admit. The plus side there is that unlike VT, the architecture department will be involved and they do consider your portfolio). It’s really difficult to find less selective architecture programs in/near North Carolina).

UCincinnati has a respected “B.Arch with Co-op” program. You meet the requirements for Physics amd Calculus, and you can submit a portfolio. However your application will be part of the “Rolling review” which lowers odds of admission since most applications were submitted by the Dec1 prooeity deadline. On addition, you wouldn’t be eligible for the highest merit scholarships. If you apply, do so ASAP.
