Chance me for Pitt, McGill, Wisconsin...

Hey there! Got a minute to calm my horrible nerves?

Applying to:

  • Pitt (rolling)
  • McGill (RD, no EA offered)
  • Wisconsin-Madison (EA)
  • BU (RD, no EA offered)
  • Rutgers (EA)
  • UVM (accepted EA)
  • UMBC (accepted EA)

Intended major: environmental science, maybe international relations.

Demographics: Basically white. Male. $80k income bracket.
School: Competitive public in Maryland. In a magnet program.

GPA: 3.44 UW/4.18 W
ACT: 33 one sitting, 34 superscored (36 E, 36 R, 35 S, 27 M, 8 Essay)
SAT: 1460 (700 M, 760 R/W, 24 Essay)
APs: World (5), Lang (5), Bio (4), U.S. Gov (4), Lit, Stats, APES, Human Geo

Extracurriculars:

  • Director of video production for school TV station (2 years)
  • Summer job at local nature center (5 years)
  • Election volunteer, now election judge (5 years)
  • Academic WorldQuest (team geography competition, 1 year)

Essays: I think I write quite well. But who doesn’t think that? 8-9/10.

Recs: Counselor and 2 teachers. Solid but probably not amazing. 7/10.

My main concerns right now are my:

  • Low UW GPA (dragged down by a few Cs in math, my weighted is a lot higher from lots of As in honors and AP classes). I know McGill only looks at UW GPA and my test scores.
  • Slim list of extracurriculars. I got involved in a few things pretty passionately, but I’m not the most social person and haven’t joined many clubs.
  • Noticeably low math subscore on the ACT. Goes right with my Cs in math. Numbers just aren’t my forte.

Thanks for looking me over!

Rutgers & Pitt seem to be good matches. Wisconsin & BU may be a deferral but you stand a great chance to be accepted. Best of Luck!

Bump?

Pitt: Low match. 60 to 75%. Have you applied yet? I’d be surprised if you didn’t hear back soon.
McGill: For Arts, high match to low reach. 35 to 50%. Dunno how the alleged increased apps from the U.S. post-Trump will affect the pool minima, though, and you might not hear back for a while because of your UW GPA.
U of Wisconsin-Madison: High match, possible deferral. 45 to 55%.
BU: High match to low reach. 35 to 50%. Can you afford it? It’s pretty expensive, and I don’t know if you could get either merit or need aid.
Rutgers: Low match. 60 to 75%.

I presume UVM and UMBC are your safeties?

Thanks @FLapple355 and @KingBibi for your feedback! I’m definitely feeling better about my applications. One more bump?

@KingBibi The increase in US applications is not alleged, McGill has reported a 22% increase.

Update: accepted to Pitt and Rutgers. Bump?
