Applying: Exeter, Andover, Groton, Loomis, Milton, Taft, Kent, Mercersburg
9th Grade applying for 10th

please js lmk what are my chances of getting into ONE school at all i really really want this opportunity

General

  • Taiwanese student at a bilingual school
  • No legacy/ alumni
  • Attended PEA Summer (Access Exeter) 2 Honors + 1 Satisfactory (art)
  • SSAT: 84 V 99 M 96 R (94 Avg)

Academics

  • GPA: 3.95 ish??? except for 1 B in mandarin(but it holds 5 credits in freshmen year) all straight As
  • however i accidentally submitted my midterm report which was way worse (85 avg) for 5 subjects coz gateway did its auto submit thing
  • Not ranked
  • 1 Honors Course (English Literature - the only offered one)
  • However I had to submit my midterm exam scores to 3 schools (Exeter, Andover, Milton) as they wouldn’t take things from late Feb which is when semester grades are released. The scores weren’t great and averaged to be a B. BUT They agreed to let me send my semester report when it comes like I’m doing for all other scores and I’m pretty sure that one is straight As + 4.0. Hopefully that shows improvement.

  • i also got a rec from my associate principal which was actually really thoughtfully written
  • above average essays, i tried to be specific to each school in at least 1 answer
  • the interviews went pretty smoothly i had really fun conversations, i also continued emailing the schools

I would say you have at least a 50% chance of getting into one or more schools if you were applying as a freshman (most probably Mercersburg). However, I don’t know how much applying as a 10th grader will affect your chances- at most schools 10th grade admissions are more competitive so I would suspect your chances would go down. I think your academics/grades will be neutral in the eyes of the admission office. (I’m in 8th grade so don’t take my word for it, just my personal opinion.) Gl on M10!

Not necessarily. While there are fewer seats, there are also fewer applicants for 10th. This is when many JBS students come in, and many schools deliberately add to their class at this time.

You are right, though, that there are more students admitted for 9th. And I agree that with this list, the OP’s odds of having one acceptance are good.

Makes sense- most JBS end at 9th grade. Thanks for clarifying!
