Chance me for PSU/Jefferson, RPI/Albany, and GWU???

Hi,
I’m a high school junior and I’m really interested in these programs and it would be great if you could chance me and/or recommend me with other colleges that have dual degree/accelerated medical programs? :smiley:

So my top choices are RPI/Albany, PSU/ Jefferson, and GWU but I’m not sure about my chances…
These are out of state for me.

Here are my stats:
Rank: top 16% (?)
GPA: 3.96 (weighted) :((
SAT: 1480
Subject tests:
Math 2: 670 (i know this is really bad but I’m thinking of retaking)
will take: Bio and Math 1

APs I am taking/will be taking next year:
Language and Composition
Calculus AB
US History
Biology
Chemistry
Environmental Science
Macroeconomics

Extracurriculars:
100+ hours at a local hospital
volunteered at the Emergency room
volunteered at a Christian camp 40 hours
Some national honor societies
key club
Choir: Went to carnegie hall, got into some audition-based choirs.
Played piano since 7 years old

Again, I’m not sure if my stats are good enough, but I worked my way up from CP to AP classes and my GPA went up a lot, so I hoping that helps.
And if you have any information about accelerated medical programs in general, lemme know too!
Thanks!

@grfmky Every year 2 threads are created for BS/MD applicants. One thread for discussion during the application cycle and second thread for posts & perspectives after application cycle ends on May 1st. Here are the links. Take time to review the results thread (unfortunately not every active participant during the cycle posts their results but still the 20-25 posts will give an idea). In the discussion thread (long one), you can search any specific school posts at the bottom of the page.

Make any posts further only in the current year discussion thread so that people will respond.

It futile to chance any one, even if the GPA = 4.0 and test scores are 1600 (SAT) and 36 (ACT). It is not just gpa and test scores provides the admission. It is whole package, EC, passion, essays, interviews etc.,

Why are you crying because of a 3.96? lol

@NASA2014
Well…its out of 5.0
I also think of it as having an 89.9 and it really annoys me lol

@GoldenRock
Thanks!

Low chance for RPI/ALB. in 2013 the average SAT was 1471. I’d bet it is higher now and those lower SATs probably had many other things in their application to get in. Its like getting into an IVY, High grades are necessary, but not sufficient.

That said, I recently met a young doctor who started at a local CC, then to RPI and onto Albany Med the old fashioned way, High (GPA+MCATs).

None at all.

With the SAT, GPA, and ranking, you’ll be screened out at first glance unless you’re URM.

These are all solid mid-tier programs- pretty much expecting top 10% rank (preferably top 5%), 1550 + SAT or 34 + ACT, and 3.85 + UW GPA out of most Asian applicants.

@GreenPoison @NoKillli
Aha…i see
A lot of people ive talked to have just told me to apply so its refreshing to see people being honest with me.
Im reconsidering even applying in the frist place… i know the application process is tedious…is it even worth it for me ?

Unless you have a hook I really don’t think so. The GPA is way too low, and the SAT needs to be 1500+ to even have a chance.

@grfmky
Hello
I represent a family who has four in BS MD program Penn stateJeff

Please remember…
This is only June, and if you feel you really want this BSMD and the SAT is not ideal(honestly folks-it is not that low), one can go and take ACT—or redo SAT but really focus, study and crush the exam…i saw this happen with one in my family who hated SAT, did “blah on SAT” and came back with 35 on ACT
SO if you really want to do it, show you have the stuff, focus, study and either retake SAT or take ACT…
Also, sounds like your hook is music…i was similar hook…

@grfmky, @bearchichi ,

@bearchichi, first let me congratulate your family, that’s an amazing track record of accomplishment that would make any family so proud of, congratulations.

I feel in case of @grfmky, even if he gets perfect results in everything from now on, it is a rather long shot, perhaps even for URM candidates. If he/she has at least a a year of studies ahead to demonstrate consistent progress and to bring up the grades, then there could be chances. (I believe an UW GPA of 3.6 at a bare minimum as requirement irrespective of how ultra competitive, prestigious or tough school one may be attending and how super solid all other factors may be). It appears @grfmky finished the junior year already and so not enough lead time to accomplish that, assuming what appears is the case here. So realistically speaking I don’t see much scope, even though he/she can apply for few and try out without having too much of expectations.

Alternatively some schools seem to have decent direct D.O. programs which are relatively easier to get in but with great residency match results later on (one of the last posts in the official thread). Also there seems to be one unified residency matching scheme for both M.D and D.O grads from 2020 on wards.

Or, the traditional route (4 years undergrad + MCAT and the whole 9 yards) with prior strategy on how to plan well ahead and execute the next few years. I would recommend to take some time to go through the various posts (or all) on the latest Official thread to get perspectives of what to expect and to plan for future accordingly if traditional route is the choice.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks for all your advice! I will definitely consider…
