Chance Me for Purdue [engineering, 3.5 GPA, 1500 SAT]

UW - 3.5
SAT - 1500
10th APs - APCSP, WHAP
11th APs - AP Chem, APCSA, AP Lang, APUSH, AP Calc BC
12 APs - AP Lit, AP Stats, AP Physics C, AP Gov, AP Micro, AP Macro, AP Psych
Extracirriculars - orchestra in 9th, debate in 9th and 10th, computer club in 11th and 12th

Planning on majoring in aero, maybe a minor in business
what are my chances?

Purdue has become a reach for even the strongest applicants for your intended major. Your GPA is below the engineering reported average but your rigor and test score are good. Take your shot but create a well balanced school list with safeties and matches. Good luck!

I think I’m the exception, not the rule, however I got into Aero with a 3.44 UW gpa. I had two APs senior year, and a 1520 sat score. I got deferred then accepted and now am committed.

I think it’s worth applying but I wouldn’t expect to get in like I would a safety. There’s a reason their reported average gpa is crazy high

Likely not great - but who knows. Apply and see. With that many APs, your GPA might be seen in a different light.

And if your list is balanced, you’ll find a “like” Purdue school with no issue and have access to similar outcomes.

Good luck.

What about Purdue appeals to you? Perhaps there are other similar schools that can be suggested.

I agree with the advice you’ve been given above. And the first school I’d think about is Iowa State. It should be a sure thing for you, it has a really strong engineering program, and if you like intercollegiate athletics at Purdue, then you should get a similar vibe from Iowa State. Additionally, it’s closer to a major town (32m to Des Moines vs. 70m from Purdue to Indianapolis).

Well, since you asked, based on what I have seen from others over the last few years, because of your GPA, if I had to make a bet, I would bet against you.

However, your SAT is excellent, and the rest of your profile seems impressive. I definitely think you could handle it and I hope you come back here and post that I was wrong.

iirc, purdue admits students for general engineering and then after a year you can concentrate. if this is the case and you want to do aero, your first year performance in college is going to be more important than high school.

If that is the case, and OP definitely wants to pursue aerospace engineering, s/he may want to include schools that have direct admission to this major (or no barrier to declaring/switching to this major later on).

Excellent suggestion. I was also going to recommend checking out Utah State’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering program:

I believe a 3.5 plus that test score should qualify you for direct admissions to that program:

I also understand Wichita State’s program to be very plugged into the industry:

I don’t really know anything about their admissions, however.

UMN Twin Cities?

It would be helpful for OP to respond with more information:

  • cost constraints?
  • home state?
  • location or size preferences?
  • other preferences (including, as @Catcherinthetoast asked, what about Purdue is attractive?)

And of course, whether s/he is even interested in receiving other school suggestions or just wants to be chanced for Purdue (which really is just a parlor game when you ask a bunch of lay people on the Internet).
