Chance Me for Reaches, Please: Cornell, CMU, Duke

<p>Hey, I was hoping that I could get a chance for these reach schools. Sorry if this isn’t in the correct format, but here it goes:</p>

GPA (UW): 3.6
SAT I: 2250 total
ACT: 34 composite
SAT II: Math 2- 800; Chemistry - 800; Biology - 750
AP Tests: 5 - Calc BC, Chemistry, Biology, AP US
4 - German, English, World History</p>

<p>EC/Awards:
2012 USAMO Participant/Qualifier
2012 14/15 on AIME; top 3 in CA; top 15 in nation
2012 top 1% in AMC 12A (114/150)
Research internship at Berkeley material engineering lab
Won county science and engineering fair: 2nd place overall; 1st place award from US Navy
Honorable mention in national Toshiba exploravision competition in 9th grade
President of Key Club
Member of robotics team, math team, science club, and tutoring club at school
AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Semifinalist
National German Exam Gold medalist 10th and 11th grade</p>

<p>Essays: Great, I think
Recs: Also great, I’m sure. I also got a recommendation from my postdoc at the lab I interned at.
Interviews: CMU and Duke are all I’ve had so far and they went great, I feel.</p>

<p>So… yea. My grades are dreadful, but I’m proud of my awards and ECs. I know the whole “bad grade, good school” thing is rare to say the least, but I’ll see where the chips fall. Please tell me whether you think I have a fighting chance. I mean, I’ve applied already so feel free to be brutally honest :). My major is material science engineering.</p>

<p>You grades certainly aren’t dreadful and your other scores prove that you smart. you have a fighting chance, just be sure to highlight your ECs and how focused you have been in you topic of interest.</p>

<p>Your GPA is obviously you weakest factor, but I don’t think it will kill your chances. You are a strong applicant overall. I think your chances are pretty good at CMU and Cornell. I would guess that you will get into at least one, if not both. Duke is more of a reach, but I still think you have a shot.</p>

<p>Thank you for the responses. The generally positive feedback does make me feel quite a bit better. I was under the impression that Cornell was harder to get into than Duke, but whatever.</p>
