Chance me for the Ivies (+some other competitive schools)

Hi, I’m in the middle of the applying processes so I would appreciate it if you could give me some feedback on some of the schools I’m interested in.

First of all:

Exchange Student from Europe, currently senior in Oklahoma.

Fluent in 3 languages (2 of which are English and Italian).

GPA: 3.9 unweighted

0 AP classes because my native advanced classes are not recognized :frowning: (I can’t take any here because of my graduating schedule so I think I will self-teach and take the test only).

400 hours of community work in the 2012-2013 time period

Played Basketball for 4 year in home country and received certificate of honored player.

Member of BETA Club here in the US school.
Member of National Honors Society here in the US.
Member of the Student Council here in the US.

I have two excellent recommendation letters from two teachers, English and Math.

Test Scores: I have taken only the math and science part of the ACT and got a composite score of 32, but I CAN do better because I got bored in the test… I will give both the ACT and the SAT, but judging on everything else other than the tests (which are know are a big deal), do I have any chances for some good schools such as MIT, Harvard, Penn State, Berkeley, NYU, etc?

I want to study Computer Science. I am good at writing essays so I will spend a lot of time on that during the application.

ALSO: My country’s education works in a way that:
we start Biology in 4th grade and have it every year from there.
Start Chemistry in 7th grade and have to take it every year from there.
Start Physics since 5th grade and you have to take it every year from there.
Start Math since 1st grade and have to take it every year from there.

So basically all of the sciences are mandatory from elementary school until graduation, idk if that helps…

Your strength is your GPA, your weakness are your SAT, SAT2, lack of AP, and international status. Your ECs can also be a little better. Best luck:)
MIT-high reach
Harvard-high reach
Penn State (or you mean upenn?)-low match/safety
Berkeley-high match
NYU-match

chance back?http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1574644-please-chance-my-ed-ea-will-chance-back-2.html

Are you Italian? If yes what liceo are doing? Classico or scientifico?

Okay, sorry for the ignorance, but I’m not too familiar with the terms :P. Does high reach mean difficult or achievable?

I was actually talking about University of Pennsylvania… What do you mean by safety (low reach)?
Anyways, I’m an international, aren’t APs counted differently since my school system is different? Also, doesn’t the fact that I’m an exchange student (thus an international) AND being fluent in 3 languages help at all?

And lastly, are 400 hours of community service really that bad lol?

Thanks for the rate :)

I’m not Italian, sadly :(… I live in South Europe though, near Italy so…

Reach means difficult, match means suitable, and safety means pretty much guaranteed. I knew you were talking about upenn lol. I think being an international student would compromise your chance in spite of your multi-languages background. 400 hours of community service isn’t bad at all, but you really need something more special. Understand that those schools you are applying are really the BEST in the world.

But, don’t the schools like the “variety” in their student body? I mean I thought that they wanted diversity and more languages=better, I mean it’s not that I don’t know English lol…

So you are saying:
Penn State (or you mean upenn?)-low match/safety

Is low match the same thing as safety or not? Sorry for the question again but I feel like low match means low chances… Or am I wrong?

Long story short, do I have good chances for upenn or not?

Trust me, lots of people can speak languages; in fact, I can too. low match means very close to safety. For Penn State, it is your safety; for upenn, it is your reach, meaning it would be hard.

Yeah lol, but fluent in 3? Also it’s more about the ethnic and geographical background that the college cares more… I mean, it was in MIT’s website too and from what I was reading from **************s.com the college has more interest in you as long as you are a minority, where foreigners played an important role… Anyways I’m not saying that there are more internationals than american kids but still…
Thanks for your advice anyways.

Bumping this.

Penn State, you’re practically in already. (if you mean UPenn, then it will be close)
NYU, it’s harder to get in, but I’d be surprised if you didn’t.
For the others, they’re all crazy tough to get into, but you have a chance, especially because you’re a minority. Try taking the ACT again to see if you can do better, but a 32 is pretty amazing.

It seems you don’t have an official test score yet. It is impossible to chance without any standardized test scores. And you are very behind in the game as most students applying to these schools would have submitted ED/EA to at least one of them already.
