Chance me for these three?

Hi all, I just wanted your feedback on the likelihood of me getting into these three colleges:
Tulane, Northwestern, OSU

Any feedback is appreciated. I’m also looking to get into some more competitive schools - well schools that are as competitive as Northwestern - but I’m currently not sure.

I’ve been an NJROTC officer since my freshman year, I’m currently the Battalion CO (since Junior Year). I joined DECA, stayed for two years, then left to make time for tennis. As for tennis, I made varsity, picked up a Scholar Athlete patch, then dropped it for time reasons. I have 2 academic letters and a scholar activities patch from NJROTC. I’m not quite sure what I can write about for tennis, but I can definitely write a lot about my impact on NJROTC and I know I have good rec letters from my instructors (one accidentally emailed me what he wrote, after submitting my rec. Oops).

As for outside of school events, I played violin for 8 years and participated in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program, which I finished with Honors my Junior year. I have over 400 hours of community service, mostly done through an exchange program at my local university. I also have received some leadership and citizenship awards, as well as a commendation from my local Congressman.

I’m not sure how well my essays will turn out; I’m currently having them editted, but I know I can count on some at least good recommendation letters from my teachers.

Sorry about the repetitive use of ‘I’.

Whoops, failed to mention that I also have an NROTC scholarship to my name, though I’m not TOO sure how important that is to have in one’s admissions profile.

Your stats qualify you for all of these schools. I know that Tulane would be lucky to land you as a recruit. If you really want Tulane, be sure to show a lot of knowledge of and interest in the school. Go into detail on those 400 hours of community service because that is immensely important to the school. Show the committee how Tulane’s specific programs will connect you to the future that you dream of. Be specific. Be creative (That means interdisciplinary, if necessary.) Be enthusiastic. If you are using the school as a back-up you may want to pick another, as Tulane is very proud of its consistently very high ratings in recent years – in terms of happiness of student body, quality of life, best city, etc. – and therefore rejects many well qualified applicants because it wants to maintain that morale. Every year disappointed students come to this forum screaming “yield protection” or some other pejorative, when the school just wants people who are a good fit for that culture and are mature enough to thrive while studying in New Orleans. In any event, with your background I wouldn’t stress out too much. You are going to wind up somewhere great that will allow you to be whatever you want in life. Best of luck to you!

@NJDad68 I see. I’m not using Tulane as a backup. My back ups are the state schools (CSU system here). I’ve read about the student life at Tulane and I genuinely like what I’ve read.

Your stats are excellent, and your extracurriculars are impressive. If you plan on going into the military, I thank you in advance for your service. Our veterans are our best people.

You are definitely going to get into Tulane and OSU.

Northwestern may be a low reach for you. You definitely have enough to get your foot in the door, but NU is unpredictable at times. If you applied to more NU-caliber schools, I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into more than a couple of them.

I would really highlight your (possible) military ambitions and experience in any application you send.

100% chance of getting into Tulane and OSU. Solid chance at Northwestern even with the slightly low GPA, but if essays are low quality then you may not get accepted.

If your genuine interest in Tulane shows through, you should be OK. You are squarely within Tulane’s 25%-75% ACT range (30-33) and just into the top quarter SAT range (above 2160 for most recent class). Your GPA is in the 25%-75% range as well. I mention this because, as with many schools, there are many more well-qualified applicants than the school has room for, so they get to pick and choose according to interest in the school and/or other types of diversity in background, skill set, and academic interests that the admissions committee is looking for. That’s why all of this is so unpredictable. This was well explained in a classic blog post by Tulane admissions director Jeff Schiffman, made after Tulane early decision letters went out for the class of 2019. (See, http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2015/12/its-going-to-be-okay.html?m=1). Bottom line: nothing is a lock. Be humble. Be tenacious. Be enthusiastic. Be encouraged, and everything will be OK!

You are certainly an interesting applicant. OSU is a no brainer, they will almost 100% accept you. Northwestern is a very unpredictable school as some users have stated above. I would try not to P.A.D or pad your application. This is something common many applicants do when applying to schools like northwestern. Depending on the time and day your application gets read you will get in or get denied. Consider applying early decision, that way if you get denied you will have time to readjust a plan. Now back to my advice on not padding your application. What I mean by that is try and focus on emphasizing the key points you want to get across in your essay. You could write an essay so good it doesn’t deserve to be read by The President, but chances are they won’t read all of it or they will simply put you into the snobby college want to be (Not saying you are) that simply wants to seem like they do everything simply for college admissions. I believe if you emphasize your desire for the military and community service, you will be admitted to northwestern or any school of that caliber. Hope my advice helped. If you wouldn’t mind checking out some of my posts and giving me your feedback that would be great  Have a nice day!

I agree with the feedback above- pretty good chance at Tulane, OSU, and Northwestern. Your ECs are very unique-- they definitely set you apart from other applicants. Relatively good GPA and awesome SAT score. You mentioned you were considering applying to more selective schools. I think you should take the chance and see what happens.

Match for all schools but Northwestern…that one might be a reach because of the low unweighted GPA…chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1939905-chance-me.html#latest

@WaterpoloGod23 Lol I applied Princeton SCEA just because. I probably should have done NW instead

Does anyone happen to know how class rank plays into admissions? I’m pretty sure my class rank is among the top 5%, since that’s where it was at the end of my junior year
