Chance Me for Top Schools

Hey all, senior at Dunwoody High School in Georgia here looking for some opinions on my chances. I’m a white male, and a member of the LDS Church (Mormon).

Besides my safety school, I am applying to Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, and Georgetown, looking to go pre-med with a bio major if they don’t have a dedicated pre-med track.

I’m a strong essay writer, and great at interviews.

Let me know if you need more information, and please be blunt!

Grades & Scores:

-Graduating with weighted 4.3 and unweighted 4.0 GPA out of a max 5.0
-All Honors classes and straight A’s
-AP’s: Environmental Science, American Govt., World History, Spanish, BC Calculus,
Psychology, Physics C, Comparative Government, American Literature, Macroecon, multivariable Calculus. Got fives in all except for 4 in environmental, 3 in calculus.
-SAT: 2170 first try, 2300 second try. (800 reading, 800 writing, 700 math)
-SAT Subject Tests: Spanish - 790; Biology - 690
-Class Rank: Not officially reported, but counselor says i’m Valedictorian

EC’s:

  • Eagle Scout (Substantial Project: Upwards of $1,100 construction project at my school), Senior Patrol Leader of my troop for two years, heavy leadership responsibility.
  • President of Spanish Honor Society
    > Fluent in Spanish
    > Organize weekly Spanish to English interpreting at a local church, plus holiday drives
  • President of Spanish Club
  • Accepted to Governor’s Honors Program as a Spanish Major (summer study program funded by the state of GA, highly competitive three tiered interview based admissions, represents top 1% of students in their area in the state)
  • Active Mormon, leadership positions since middle school.

Harvard: Reach
UPenn: Reach
Stanford: Reach
CMU: Match
Georgetown: High match
Cornell: High match

Are UGA or GA Tech even considered for safety level?

I would scratch off CMU and Cornell but add Brown and Duke. The latter two offer a much more suitable environment for pre-med studies in terms of research opportunities and grade inflation.

I don’t understand how you could have an unweighted GPA of 4 out of a max of 5.0 and yet have all A’s. If you have all A’s and you are talking about “unweighted”, then your GPA should be identical to the max–ie 5.0 out of 5.0. At least that is how it is in our school district and everywhere else that I have heard of. Or did you make a typo?

Sounds like you’re a very strong candidate. I’m LDS, and graduated from Harvard way back when. Harvard admissions are kind of like the lottery. You’ve got to have stellar grades, test scores, and extra-curriculars just to get a ticket. After that, it’s largely random chance - just too many great candidates for too few spots. So no guarantees, but you definitely have a chance. Good luck!

To Jennieling: I’m guessing the 5 is the theoretical maximum, after weighting.

Thanks for your quick responses and advice. First time user of this site, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

@Catria:

Thanks for the chancing. And yes, I am applying to UGA as a safety.

@JennieLing:

momofteens is correct. A 4.0 GPA means you have gotten all A’s, but all AP class credits count as a 5.0. So the weighted GPA goes above. A 5.0 is not actually possible, as it would require that every single class for all four years be an AP. At least, that’s how it is at my school, not sure about the grading scales of others.

I might just take your advice on that - availability of research opportunities & hospital work is a major factor for me. Thanks!
