As an out of state applicant, UCSD and SJSU will offer you no financial aid. Can you afford to attend UCSD at $65K/year or SJSU at $40K/year?

The UC’s and CSU’s have their own GPA calculation. They only use 10-11th grades for the a-g course requirements in their GPA calculation. They also only give extra honors points (weighting) for AP and IB courses taken 10-11th grades for OOS applicants.

Here is the GPA calculator and please post your UC capped weighted GPA: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

UC’s and CSU’s also do to consider race/ethnicity in their admission decisions and essays are only required by the UC’s.

Here is the UCSD Freshman profile for 2018 admits and as you can see your GPA and test scores are below the 25th percentile which makes UCSD a High Reach school.

UCSD GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students

High School GPA UC capped weighted: 4.02 - 4.28
ACT Composite Score: 28 - 34

SJSU admits by eligibility index and major. What is your intended major?

Eligibility index= (UC capped weighted GPA x200) + (ACT composite x10). Depending upon major SJSU could be a Match to a High Reach school.

Best of luck and make sure any out of state school is affordable by running the Net Price Calculator.

i definitely can’t afford those. I didnt know they were that expensive. What about U of Maryland and U of Houston?

@ihatethesouth123: I cannot comment on University of Maryland or University of Houston in regards to chances but I can link you the cost of attendance for each. Both are expensive for out of state students.

If you can post your college budget, I am sure CC posters can give you ideas for some affordable colleges to consider.

my parents make 60k a year. is there any schools u can come up that are in texas, california, or up north that i would be able to afford

For California colleges/universities to be affordable as an OOS student, you would need to have significantly higher Stats especially ACT score for a chance at some good merit aid along with need-based aid. You need to try and get your ACT score up into the 30+ range for some merit aid and will have to target private schools.

Hopefully other posters can chime in with suggestions, but California schools are not going to be affordable unless you bump up your ACT score.

You may want to ask this school directly if the 3.5 GPA minimum for this scholarship is unweighted or based on some kind of weighting system: https://www.pvamu.edu/faid/types-of-aid/scholarships/university-scholarships/ . But also increase your ACT score to 26 or higher, or get a 1260 or higher on the SAT to try for the top scholarship.

With $60k in income, you couldn’t afford these schools even if you got in. I think realistically, you’ll want to stay in-state. If you study and bring up the ACT score by a few points, you have a really good chance at UTK. Middle Tennessee is pretty much a lock.
