About me:
I am black and native american.
I’m half blind (Amblyopia)
I’m first generation
I’m struggling with personal statements
I go to a very poor high school where less than 30% of grads go to a four year university. I live about 40 miles north of San Diego in a working class Hispanic dominated area.

My intended major is Sociology

I know there are areas where some serious improvement would really help but this is what I have. I really love UCLA and UCSD and visit them frequently. However, these are defiantly not the only schools I am applying o, I just want to know my chances beyond what I read on their websites. Thanks and any contribution is greatly appreciated!!!

Since you are in state, UCLA is a low reach and UCSD is a high match. What I will say is, as a student who is Native American and Black, you could probably get admitted anywhere that hasn’t gotten rid of AA. Okay, well maybe that was a stretch, but it SIGNIFICANTLY increases your chances.

You EC’s look really good but your GPA and test scores are not up to par for UCSD or UCLA. Your course rigor is good and will help since you come from a poor high school also being 1st generation is a plus. If you can write about overcoming your many challenges, you may have a better shot. It will all come down to how well you present yourself to admissions so no one can really tell you your chances. Going into a less competitive major will give you another advantage. I would try to retake your SAT or ACT to strengthen your application along with taking some SAT subject tests to show your expertise in a few subject areas. Definitely apply but have some good back ups. I wish you good luck, unfortunately the UC’s are a numbers game…

I disagree that your test scores aren’t up to par. UCSD’s mid 50% ACT scores are 23-30 while UCLA’s is 25-31. I personally believe that you’ll be accepted with those test scores, the only problem is your GPA.

Here is the 2014 Freshman Profile for UCLA and UCSD:
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/san-diego/freshman-profile/index.html</a>
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/ucla/freshman-profile/index.html</a></p>

As you can see the Mid 50% ACT is 30 for UCSD and UCLA with average GPA over 4.0.

I don’t think UCSD is a high match for your, but you might have a chance there. I think UCB is more holistic among the 3 top UCs.
