Community college is not a good idea for an international since they don’t qualify for instate status and thus don’t qualify for any scholarships either at the CC nor as transfers. It’s only a good solution if they can be full pay.
Commuting to a college where you got a full tuition scholarship, where your relatives cover your food and other costs, is a possibility.
Thank you for this information. I didn’t mean that it would enable me to stay in the US after study, I just meant that in my home country and most other country’s, if you have a CPA, you are basically guaranteed employment. I mean that is how it is here, thank you for clearing that up.
Since you said so, I’ll be keeping Duke, do you think I should keep Cornell? Also, since I am removing Ole Miss and UConn, should i put in Wellesley as you mentioned earlier?
For my relatives, my aunt lives in South Carolina, the Other 2 in Maryland, I am not sure about the others but when I find out, I will get back to you.
I do often feel like if I just saved up my profit and walked everywhere, I would be able to get nicer things for myself but sadly the safety of my area doesn’t allow me. Thank you for acknowledging this, because I often feel like it’s a waste of money.
I think i might be able to live with one of my aunts. She is in South Carolina but I’m not sure about community college tho, because that was not the plan and my mom would not agree to it (it has been brought up and shut down).
hi! So I now understand that you do not need to study accounting before getting a CPA assuming you sit for it, thank you for this. I have added Denison to my list since I’m like swapping in schools. I think i could live with one of my relatives, maybe my aunt in Maryland or SC, but none of the schools on my list are there. However, I will be looking for them now and if you or any other could suggest some that suit my interests, that would help a lot, thank you.
As for the community college path, my mother and I have talked about this but she ultimately did not agree to it because that would just lead to additional costs and my father probably wouldn’t too.
I’m sorry if whatever I wrote sounds dumb or poorly constructed, I’m trying to match the maturity of the people I’m conversing with. thank you once again.
I am just seeing this one sorry By tommorow evening or so I will finish the updated version of the chance me thread and if possible, kind of swap out that first one so that American readers can get the full, clearer picture. Thank you!
Sorry, I was unclear. I meant once you are at a college like Denison, they tend to have excellent advising available for any major path. So, there is very likely someone there who you could talk to about being qualified to take a CPA exam, and they would help you figure out your options for majors and electives.
Oh ok, thank you! Application is very easy since there is no application fees, supplemental and CSS (instead ISFS or something like that…). Thank you and @MYOS1634 for recommending this school for me. I didn’t even know it existed until now.
Ok so should I still try for Cornell, I need some advice because I have to email admissions at least 2 weeks before the EA deadline (Nov1) so they can give me a CSS alternative, thank you!
Speaking of ideas, did we discuss Washington and Lee at all? They don’t have the same overall budget as Denison, but they do appear to give out a relatively high number of large aid offers to the Internationals (they do this with domestic merit as well). And they actually have an Accounting major:
I’m not so sure about this. Maybe it can be done but I’ve never heard of it. My nephew had to get his masters in accounting before being allowed to be a cpa. There were also requirements about working under a cpa for a certain amount of time. I’m not an expert, but it’s not as easy as just taking a test after you graduate.
I agree that there may be some misunderstanding of the requirements for a CPA. I’m too many years removed from this so I’ll tag @Mjkacmom … I believe they have a student who somewhat recently sat for their CPA certification.
Can you give us the name of the city or its zip code?
South Carolina has lots of universities that offer merit aid. We’d need one that’s used to Nigerian Lower and Upper certificates and their letter grades/scores, and offers test optional scholarships - not obvious but we can look.
Cornell I don’t think would - AFAIK they have specific scholarships for students from some countries and it’s pointless to try and compete with them since you’re too “costly”.
Honestly Duke is almost impossible but is just worth it in case you’re the one student from Nigeria they’re interested in… you’d apply RD, wouldn’t you, so you have till Jan 2.
A college that should DEFINITELY be on your list is BEREA. Check their application deadlines. They admit one student per country max (or 1 for a geographical area with several scarcely populated countries – Nigeria is a populous country so it’d be just one student from there.)
Denison COULD be your ED choice. Read everything about Denison, Smith, Wellesley. Or Washington&Lee for Accounting.
List 3 things they offer that really match you for each college.
I’m not sure OP would be allowed to practice as a CPA in the US. I agree Accounting is a great major and OP would definitely get OPT for it but after that …?
