Chance me for UConn, Ole Miss, Clark, Duke! [international, 87/100 GPA (75+ = A), rank 1/17, 1280 SAT, business or computer science, need full ride]

I think it will be very difficult, but at least the sort of aid you need actually exists there.

Here is an overview if you are interested:

Among other things, they point ouit:

  1. Education Requirements

CPA education requirements include having at least a bachelor’s degree and completing a total of 150 college-level credits. Students may need to take additional courses after graduating to satisfy this stipulation, as bachelor’s degrees typically only require 120 credits.

  1. Specific Class Requirements

Though states do not generally require CPAs to hold accounting degrees, they do stipulate that prospective license-holders complete specific courses in the field. Thus, completing an accounting program can ensure you take the classes required for CPA licensure, which usually include a mixture of business, accounting, economics, and ethics courses.

Obviously I don’t know the details of your nephew’s case, but getting a Masters in Accounting is typically one of the ways you can both fulfill the 150 credit requirement and cover all the specific class requirements.

Yes, as they also point out:

  1. Experience Requirements

Prospective licensees must demonstrate their practical skills through 1-2 years of relevant work experience. States usually allow experience in both public and private sectors.

So it definitely is not as simple as getting a Bachelors and then taking the exam. But the point they make there is having a Bachelors in Accounting is typically not a requirement, but it might be one convenient way to get a lot of your specific class requirements filled.

My oldest is a cpa, she got her 5 year masters in accounting just to have the 150 credits needed. Her internship was spring of junior year, and she got a job offer. She deferred the offer for a year so she could pass the 4 exams before starting. My niece lives in Illinois, goes to college in Virginia, got a job offer in NY, so will take the NY cpa exam (I didn’t realize it’s based on state since my daughter went to college here in NJ and works in NJ). My niece needs to take a particular class next semester in order to be able to take the NY exams, otherwise she will need to take it after graduation first (her mom isn’t thrilled with this miscalculation).

Thank you! I’m now aware that to get a CPA, you need ~150 credits, a bachelors, like 2yrs of work, and fulfillment of state-specific requirements. I didn’t know this at the time of replying but I know that now thanks to you, so thank you!

(Moderator edits to remove zip codes and OP city. That’s better shared by PM. Thanks.)

Hello! So i’m not sure which you are talking about - mine or my aunt’s zipcode. I have aunts in Columbia, South Carolina and Maryland. My mom says she doesn’t have the faintest clue of where her other cousins are based DESPITE the fact that they keep in touch.

I don’t think you realise how much i trust you with this entire process, you (and others responding to this thread) have helped me so greatly in a few days than all my resources have in months. So, if you say i should ED to Wellesley, then I’ll be EDing to Wellesley.

I have a bit of a problem tho, on the Wellesley International webpage, it says : In an effort to simplify the financial aid process for international, undocumented, and DACA students, applicants who have indicated their intent to apply for aid will be prompted to complete a Financial Aid Intent Form after submitting their application for admission. Within three to five business days of the completion of the Common Application, students will be given access to the Applicant Portal by Admissions. We will contact applicants later in the process regarding any additional financial aid forms or documents they may need to provide. We encourage all applicants applying for aid to begin completing the CSS Profile so that if requested, they can submit it promptly. However, students won’t need to submit the CSS Profile unless they are instructed to do so by our staff. Information on assistance with its cost will also be provided.

I am a bit confused because it says here that I will receive a form after completing the common app, so does that mean that it is AFTER i add Wellesley to my college list and apply that i’ll get the form? And where it says “within three to five business days of the completion of the common app, students will be given access to the Applicant portal by admission” does this mean that its only after i “complete” my common app that I will be able to then apply to Wellesly through their own portal? and then get the form? The order of the steps is a bit hard to understand and what does it even mean when they say “after the completion of the common app”?

If anyone wouldn’t mind clearing the confusion, it would mean a lot. Once again, thank you so much!

hi. So i will not be applying to Cornell anyomore because I was supposed to contact admissions way earlier for a CSS waiver so thats out the window and since I don’t really have a shot, there’s no point. It doesn’t really bother me tho :kissing:

The only reason why i was considering applying EA to most schools Duke included is because I know most schools have a budget for international students and I wanted to apply early before all funds were exhausted for internationals in the early rounds. If you think I should apply regular decision for Duke (assuming I’d still get aid), then I wouldn’t really mind. It’d give me time to finish the 3 projects I am working on currently and maybe show more interest and rack up more hours on ecs.

As for Berea, i was considering it but because no one on this thread mentioned it, i thought the no tuition thing was something to be taken with a grain of salt. But, since you’ve mentioned it, I will be applying there.

This will be one of the many thing I have to get back to you about as i haven’t really dived deep into them but I will do it.

Yh, I’m aware that i may not be allowed to practice as an accountant in the US. I think that’s worst case scenario (after being rejected from every school and not even getting admission of course), but i figured I could just return back to Nigeria and work as a CPA if that would be the case. Expats get paid really high (like up to millions of naira, which a traditional worker can work for more than 17yrs and still not be able to get up to 500k monthly) here even if they do the bare minimum in their organization so that leverage would be good for me. The downside to that tho is that I would most definitely be living my life as a closet case cuz there’s no such thing as a coming out here lol, you’ll simply be lynched :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:. that’s just worst case scenario tho…

Thank you! I will not be applying to Cornell again tho, because my chances are slim, their supplementals are long and as @MYOS1634 said, it’d be pointless trying to compete with other students because i’d be expensive.

Yeah :smiling_face_with_tear: still going to apply tho, the only thing i’m worried about is my demonstrated interest toward william n lee but I’m currently fixing up the rest of may app

Well, I’m honored by your trust but you should really read about Wellesley, Smith, Washington&Lee, and Denison. These are quite different in “personality”. Which is the best match for yours?

Css costs money so instead international students who need financial aid use the ISFAA. (You can find the 2025 ISFAA online, download it, etc. Either it’s mentioned on their website or you can email the international admissions officer to ask whether it’s acceptable to them.) Wellesley has streamlined the process: they send you a form similar to the ISFAA once they’ve received your application.

Duke doesn’t have EA. Only ED and RD.
You can only apply ED to one college (and, if not admitted, ED2 to another college). Some offer EA (non binding) but not all.

I feel like I am taking too long to respond to this post in particular and i don’t want to seem like Ive gone AWOL or don’t appreciate the help. School has been occupying so much of my time but i have been able to do a fair amount of digging on Wellesley since its my ED school and I think i’ve fallen in love with it honestly. I haven’t yet taken the virtual tour but i’ve spend a lot of time this past two days just going on their websites, student vlogs, quora (lots of quora) and i think the website itself doesn’t capture the passion alums or students use when talking about their experiences in Wellesley. The honor code, intimate classes, the feeling of being in a room filled with women and only women where you’re not shunned, discriminated against, or stuck in a particular major/track really sits well with me. Idk i think the rigidity of the Nigerian society has made attending an all girls very appealing to me (this isnt relevant but I’m not even allowed to sit on the outer seat at the front of our 2 seat passenger seat if my male counterpart is going to sit in of the seats also, ie when i sit at the front, i am forced into the seat between the driver and the second passenger seat (window seat) because the driver says thats how its supposed to be. Everything in my life is dictated by one male thing or the other, down to how our class rank should be; my maths teacher has made it known several times that the “traditional” way it should be is that boys come first to fifth, and then us girls fill every other position; whether divorced or not, married women can’t renew their or their childrens passport wo permission from their husbands, and that is a real challenge esp when the men in question are just useless peices of existence. I’m really tired of being subject to the sexism present in every microsome of every aspect of Nigerian culture, so even though my relations wouldn’t be explictiy with women, it sure would help that a lot of it would ). I like the location; I like the tight knit alumni network, i hear that Wellesley alums are always willing to help other Wendys; i know this one might not always hold true but i think an understanding alumni network and close relationships with professors will always mean you have a network of people willing to help you with job placements, expand learning horizons, and js stuff alike. I absolutely love the architecture. I would like to walk on my college campus and imagine myself walking across that campus every day imagining i was in the shoes of one of the smartest female leads of all time in my opinion - Hermione Granger (both in the books, movies and fan fics)

Like i said, I’m aware a lot of these “facts” are surface level so if you or anyone else knows any more quirks or niches that you think I could tie back to myself or would help me demonstrate greater interest in Wellesley or just better my essays, it would really be appreciated.

Currently, I am learning about their school traditions and campus culture and professors, then I’ll start my why wellesley essay. I know its really late and ed deadline is laughing at me but I’ll keep on.

I’m also on William & Lee rn, time is not on my side but like…whatever ig. Again, if you guys know any bit of information, a professor you think I might be interested in their work, a niche you think I might be drawn to or basically just anything you think would help my overall app to their school, it would mean so so much. Thank You

I know whatever information I have given here is really surface level so if any of you

oh  Thank you, this sounds way easier than what i thought it was, thank you so much!

That image of having to sit away from the window seat is a good way to start your general CommonApp essay.

Yes, using the image of your forced placement on the bus as a metaphor for the incredibly constricted role of women and girls in Nigerian society and your desire to go to college in a society where women’s roles are not limited, would be very powerful. Plus you’d be unconsciously tapping into a social justice event from the civil rights movement in the US (that everyone knows about, so you would not have to mention it), when US African Americans had to fight for the right to sit anywhere on the bus that they wanted, as opposed to being forced to sit in the back. Honestly, that response that you wrote above is the beginning of a very powerful Common App essay. BTW, if you want to walk in someone’s shoes at Wellesley, it’s not a character from Harry Potter you should be referencing. It’s Hilary Clinton, who was a '69 Wellesley grad. But I think that your own story is powerful enough that you don’t have to reference any Wellesley grads in your essay.

My common app essay started off a little different but now that you’ve mentioned it, i will either be using it in one of my supplementals or i will replace my hook for the common app. I sound like a pushover lol idec. thank you!

Omg thank you so much for this :sob: You’ve given me a great idea on how to start my why wellesley essay and the general plot of it. Thank you so much, this is really really appreciated. I wrote that becuase i found an opportunity to rant where someone would actually listen and someone did and then gave me one of the best advices I could ask for with regards to my essays. I don’t think I would have caught it myself lol. Thank you so very much, this forum is one of the best things I could have come across and decided to try out becuase of people like you and others that have contributed. thank you.

I did hear of her and i will be researching her more, thank you so much.

Please send your essay to readers now. There’s very little time to revise/edit. :crossed_fingers:
