I know I have a weak GPA due to my lack of effort in my previous years, but this year I have been trying really hard to bring my grades up. If all goes well, my GPA will be boosted significantly by the end of junior year. I was wondering if you could chance me for my UC options under the preferred major of either Biology of Chemistry. Please let me know what UC’s I should apply for or what I could do to improve my chances of getting into college. So in the end, what I’m really asking for is what UC’s should I apply for?

i would definitely work on boosting your GPA. We have quite comparable class schedules and you have a stronger SAT score then I had. It wouldn’t be crazy for you to consider the top UCs. I have so far been accepted to UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, and Davis for biology. I am quite confident in your ability to be accepted to these UCs.

I know that you go to a very competitive HS. Have you checked with your counselor for recommendations based on your stats and where your fellow Troy HS students have been accepted with your profile? Since the UC’s have become so competitive especially due to the high volume of applicants, I suggest you need to apply broadly. Have some good safety schools on your list that you are willing to attend. UCR/UCSC would be solid Match/Safety schools for you if your UC GPA remains the same. There is no reason not to apply to any of the other schools especially if you have an upward grade trend. Spend time on your essay questions (new format for UC’s where you pick 4 questions) instead of the 2 essays. I would probably throw in a few top CSU’s for possible safeties (SDSU/CSULB/CUSF/CPP and SLO).
