Chance me for UDUB

Hello, I’m a sophmore in highschool and I would appreciate if someone could help me with my chances of getting into UDUB because I’m very lost right now on what I’m supposed to be doing. Lot’s of people around me have set ecs and lots of programs they are doing but I don’t know what to do. I switched school districts at the start of 9th grade and then at the start of this year (sophmore year). Here are some details about me:

First gen to graduate highschool in the US (parents immigrated from India)

4.0 GPA unweighted for right now, but I think I might get a A- this semester in AP bio (really worried about that)

Ap Comp sci Freshman Year-5

Currently taking:

AP Bio ( Did Chem last year)

AP World History

Pre-calc (Taking pre calc at school but self studying for AP pre calc)

Honors lit both years

Geology (I tried my best to switch out of it but couldn’t)

ECs:

Since I went to a different school last year, I was not able to get any leadership roles this year and had to do different clubs

Freshman year EC’s:

Played rec soccer outside of school and Soccer gk (JVC)

Debate- Competed in LD for about 3 Tournaments

Founded club in February and had a succesful volunteer event with 30 people- Currently working on more frequent and focused volunteer events

25 Hours for Salvation Army club, Member of the Year and Volunteer Coordinator

HOSA- Shadowed competing members(unable to compete) and helped with Blood drive

Bioethics club-Learned about medical careers and diseases

This Year:

Started tutoring for free in middle of summer- 20 + volunteer hours

Competing in and a part of HOSA, Sports Med, and FCCLA

member of key club

On track for soccer JV or Varsity this year

Starting traditional dance again which I did for 3 years before I stopped

No Sat score but 1420 on PSAT

Planning to some Aps and running start next year

Going to try to volunteer for hospital and/or job shadow.

Thank you so much to however helps, I’m really lost right now and need help with this stuff.

No one can chance a 10th grader but you’re in AP bio as a 10th grader, so you are way ahead.

One should worry about learning, not grades but most U Wash students are not straight A and outside of CS, it’s competitive but not impossible to get in.

No need to take the AP pre calc test. As it is, you’ll be in Calc next year so you are way ahead.

Pick two ECs and do well and grow in them. You’ve got 6 or 8. You need quality, not quantity.

Sounds to me like you are well on your way to college admission success. Don’t worry about others - you do you. But be a kid - it sounds like you aren’t.

Come back in a year and update us and then you can do a chance me.

But it’s too early to chance - but you’re on a good path.

Ps - UW won’t look at your SAT. They only look at a small percentage of marginal apps. That doesn’t sound like you.

Thank you so much for the advice!

Check the University of Washington’s requirements page:

Make sure you are taking at least two years of foreign language. You didn’t mention this specifically in your courses. Some schools would prefer 3-4 years.

Be a good student.

Be patient.

Do not jump ahead too quickly. You are already for example way, way ahead in math. It is important in math to learn each step very solidly before you move on to the next step.

In terms of ECs, do what is right for you. Whatever you do, do it well. Be genuine. If you get into a leadership role, then listen, and make an effort to make the activity better for everyone. Leadership is not about being the boss. Leadership is about helping people and being responsible (and yes I do wish more voters would keep this in mind).

Understand that you are already doing very well. You do not need to do anything special or flashy or extraordinary. Just be a good person and be a good student and it will work out in the end.

And one A- will not matter. One or two B’s won’t matter either if these occur at some point.

Given that you are way, way ahead in biology and chemistry, I will give an additional piece of advice in case you ever think that you are a premed student: You will be a stronger student in four or five years than you are currently. Many of the required premed classes are really, really tough. The competition in these classes will be very, very strong. You should not rush to take these as early as possible. Instead take them when you are very ready, which is likely to be in your second, third, and fourth years OF UNIVERSITY.

thank you, I think I want to study for a career in the medical field, so I will definitely keep in mind what you said about taking them later

Sorry, I forgot to mention it but I am at spanish 2 right now. Thank you for the tip though, I probably will take spanish for the rest of highschool

Being able to speak a second language reasonably well is an asset for anyone who works in health care with direct patient contact.
