Hi. I’m currently a sophomore student in Georgia. While I’m a little bit on the younger end of posters here on CC, I’ve started the college search a little bit earlier than most of my peers and I’m very much interested in a little bit of an insight on my chances at any of the aforementioned institutions or even a little bit of a reality check.

My GPA, from what I have seen from others, is a little weak. Weighted, it’s an 84.643. This year, I am enrolled in two AP classes - AP Psych and AP Government (Solid As in both). My freshman year, I took AP Human Geography and earned a 4 on the exam. In my upcoming junior year, I have opted to take AP Lang, APUSH, and AP Seminar. My senior year, I intend to take AP Econ, AP Lit, AP Research, and possibly AP Bio. This puts me at about 9-10 AP Classes when I graduate.

My standardized test scores are far more attractive. This past fall, I scored a 1210 on the PSAT, which was in the top 7% of all test-takers nationwide, and I hope to replicate that success on the SAT and even give the ACT a shot.

My extracurriculars are the strongest portion of my application:

I am currently interested in a few colleges including UGA, NYU, and Vanderbilt. I intend to major in political science and ultimately attend law school. I’d love to stay in the South. If you could chance me or maybe even offer me advice on other colleges to consider, I’d greatly appreciate it!

To become competitive at some of the more selective colleges, you need to improve your grades. They should be more like 94+ than 84.

I would toss Vanderbilt out of the door. You’ll need at least a 4.1 to be slightly competitive and a 1500 to be competitive as well. How do you have a 3.0 W if you’re taking APs and have As? Which classes are you struggling in?

My school adds a .05 bump to all AP class grades. So, on my transcript, it essentially adds them in as a regular classes. For ex: an A in a AP class isn’t a 5 as far as GPA is concerned. It’s still a 4. However, any college that recalculated weighted and unweighted GPAs, I’d assume, would peg me at a higher number. My struggle subjects stem from mostly Math.
