It was just a broad explanation for a student in Nigeria who doesn’t necessarily know where the states are, each State’s background, etc. It doesn’t work perfectly because there are lots of exceptions to the rule of thumb, but for a student who doesn’t know much about US geography/history it seemed sufficient. I understand it’d be too simple for s.o who lives in NC and knows more than the fact it’s somewhere in the bottom right quarter of the US map.
Btw even American students don’t necessarily know how to read “Virginia State” vs. Cal States for instance.
Some states had 2 parallel state systems after the Morrill Act and in segregated states may have added a third system with “A&M” colleges&Normal schools for African American students, especially if following BTWashington’s philosophy. Then the systems were in some ways integrated, etc etc. leading to the situation you describe! Florida is somewhat similar (Florida State, like NCSU, being the land grant U, and the formerly segregated and now HBCU having other designations).
Even Sweet Briar would be more welcoming to OP than a country that would kill her though.
I don’t think it was a helpful comment, It just made things more confusing, and it’s just not true. It also leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
In the Southeast you’ve got major universities (non-HBCUs) like NC State, Florida State, Mississippi State, Louisiana State, Appalachian State, etc. And of the 107 HBCUs in the country only 31 have “State” in the name. Hardly a landslide in naming convention.
And really, my kids are LGBTQ. I don’t think Sweet Briar is a welcoming environment if someone is looking for a positive LGBTQ space. Not sure that is the case with this student, though. Hollins is definitely the better choice for the LGBTQ student, although there are more welcoming schools than Hollins too.
Any LGBTQ kids want my thoughts on welcoming schools I am happy to share.
I totally agree wrt Hollins v. Sweet Briar and I don’t think it would have beat Hollins financially anyway. But it’s very important to keep things in perspective for this student: Sweet Briar would be in another universe of acceptance from her current reality so that if it were the choice, she shouldn’t hesitate. (But it wouldn’t be the choice over Hollins anyway.)
As to the history of naming public universities in the US, this isn’t the place for debate so anyone who wants to understand the process for post Morrill Jim Crow or elsewhere there are books and webpages I don’t want this sidebar to derail the thread for @greensnwells
So I haven’t been online cuz of Jamb coming up 10 days from now and I’m panic reading, so they might have been accepting apps a few days ago but not today. But i’ll check and if they are still accepting, I’ll throw my application in (assuming their acceptance rate is giving I can get in with my (updated) application.
Those study abroads always have that 18+ thing attached to it I mean I understand why but that means no study abroad until my third year
You need scholarships and the deadline for those at Agnes Scott has passed.
If your budget has grown to 20k+ now, then it’s worth applying next cycle.
SUMMIT is a great program indeed and it’d be a FANTASTIC acceptance for you.
Where are you with planB: A Levels?
An advantage would be that it’d decrease the age issue when you apply to US colleges (for Fall 2027).
Ohk first of all, when @MYOS1634 said I should forget about Reed, I thought she was joking, but then I saw on Reddit that they don’t reject applicants because their yield rate is low so I’m literally not special at all haha.
Second, would it be wierd if I contacted Wheaton (and Hollins) for the second and thrid time respectively regarding speaking with someone from their SFS to talk about pricing?? And then the enrollment deposit? My mail has been in Hollins’ email for over two week, and that is my reminder email. I don’t want to be a toddler and ask for the third time because I know their inbox is probably flooded with mails from students in similar situations…but I know their inbox is probably filled with mails from students with similar situations and my email is a lengthy scroll away so I don’t want to be forgotten kinda, or have my mail attended to After may 1.
Third, meal plan at Wheaton… 8k per year for a very compulsory all you can eat (or whatever) meal plan when I eat like 3 times a day on a good day
I don’t need an all you can eat anything, and I can’t find the individual pricing for their meal plans online (just might be searching wrong; I tend to do that a lot lol). Is there any way I can bypass the stupid fee? I saw on Reddit you could get like doctor’s report or say you have religious constraints, and while I could probably cook something up concerning the both of them (a long, long list of skin and food allergies + super religious), I don’t go to the hospital a lot. Haven’t been there in over five years I think . So if I went through the stress of getting a doctor’s report and a letter from my priest (I eat whatever, but its a harmless lie with much needed benefits ), would they work to get me out of the meal plan? I don’t want to go through all that stress for nothing. (if anyone, or the Wheaton parents that luckily find my thread once in a while, know how I can get out of living on campus first year, sharing that information would be much appreciated.)
thank you! I yap a lot so my question is a bit windy so I aplogize for that
The only college I found for A levels is in Lagos…and I’m in Abuja. Even if my mom would let me go cuz she’s from there, my dad probably wouldn’t because he doesn’t know her relatives or whatever
Also, my mom already put in an app for Nigeria’s NDA, and if I pass my Jamb (and I know for sure I’m getting over their pass mark because its incredibly low for some reason), i’d be going to National Defense in September…I wasn’t part of this decision making btw so plan B isn’t looking so bright. Right now even plan A is looking bleak cuz they don’t want to answer my emails
Versions of my life in six months are looking very, very different and I’m not sure how things are going to end up, but we’ll se I guess.
Meal plans are expensive, and if living on campus mandatory (unless in apartment style dorms, but those are typically for upperclassmen). The vast majority of students don’t eat enough to justify the cost, many will move off campus for this reason to save money. There is no getting out of them. Dining venues aren’t 24/7, typically they have hours for breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Ok so when I got admitted to Wheaton, they sent me a mail regarding their WheaGlobal study abroad thing, and one of the criterias was having to be 18. You get to start college in another country basically so when @Sweetgum talked about the SUMMIT thing, I assumed it was also a first year thing. Didn’t realize it we were talking as far as third year. I don’t search up study abroad programs when researching schools cuz I’m trying to get out of my country and hopping to another one isn’t particularly high on my bucket list. Didn’t know study abroads were usually done in third year cuz again I don’t research them. Didn’t mean to make it seem like everything was about my age or wtv you thought I was trying to do since you were very nice in your response. But thanks for the enlightment I guess.
Ok so I’m not going to ANY school this year, sadly.
First off: i’m going to have to take a gap year (jamb didn’t release a bunch of kids’ result, mine included, cuz of new policies implemented a month before we were to write. That same policy changed the day the results were supposed to be released and just like that, no result. No jamb result, no entry into Nigerian unis so we’d have to sit for it again next year. They also made a bunch of policies regarding age a few months back because they’re just now finding out 14 yr olds in unis is an issue lol. This government is literally just using class of 2k25 to do rubbish and its so annoying that we’re labrats. Anyways, I may have to sit one year out so I might do Alevels for the UK, and then also retake the SAT, I have a bunch of activities (and money, finally) that i’ve been indulging in this year since apparently I’m not escaping this reality. Then, if the US and the Uk don’t work out, I’d be off to Canada to live with my aunt and go to the uni my cousin is at (then might later move into the nearby college house) but that’s just my plan for the next few months and next year if they don’t release results (jamb registrar went from being smug to crying on national tv because over 12,000 people sued jamb so embarrassing )
Jamb itself makes not sense. it’s just another useless fiscal policy. We already have WAEC, NECO, GCE, IGCSE — all those exams prove you’re ready for uni. JAMB just adds another useless financial barrier. It really doesn’t make sense that a kid will have 4 other STANDARD, INT-L RECOGNIZED leaving school exams, and federal unis will still stare them in the face and deny them admission because you got a bad score on jamb (keep in mind these exams take place once a year, and some are scheduled at 6am in the morning (like mine) and there are people with very little money that travel far distances just to be denied entrance into the hall and then not get admissions into federal unis because of lack of jamb score, where those are the only unis they can afford).
But yeah, this new age thing may help provide support for Nigerian students (self support, cuz I know government ain’t doing nothing ) , though I honestly doubt its done with the best intentions for the public in heart. Also, no Jamb = no NDA
yeah, I know the general direction of where I’m going but I’m not even sure how to streamline that or just START. So, see you all September?
(any suggestions that I can do in the mean time would be appreciated, im going to have a lot of time on my hands when exams finish in july).
