I know Iāll fully look at all my other options after decisions
I donāt know this either
Thank you! Problem (amongst other problems) is that we write waec in june (the one Iām writing in february is JAMB) so Iād have to apply after graduating and then my parents would just be like go here then, and then the lid of that matter will be shut closed
International and MIT is mad
i wanted to ask ur ecs n stats and then i saw āDadTwoGirlsā
You just gave me hope regarding this age thing, thank you Do you think I should add it to my additional info section that I would be willing to take a gap year if accepted and would then work out with each college I got into (assuming I got into them anyways) if I was allowed to do uni here? or something Iām not sure
but thatās the broad idea, what do you think?
oh
I donāt want to waste your time re-reading the same thing possibly 3 times, but I mentioned it a bit above why I may not be allowed to do this, thank you!
You can do A Levels (considered upper secondary in the US) and apply as a freshman. This is true even if the place where you take A levels is called ācollegeā.
You cannot attend a Nigerian university leading to a bachelorās degree (or equivalent/ higher education credits) because youād be considered an international transfer and international transfers donāt get scholarships. International transfers who started a credit granting program of higher education MUST be full pay.
Even US transfers donāt get scholarships that are as good as what freshmen get.
I still remember a kid years ago who had a thread titled āDid I just lose tens of thousands dollarsā He had a very high GPA and act score that granted him an automatic 4-year full tuition scholarship at his state flagship (+others).
However his guidance counselor at his small, rural HS hadnāt ever seen such a score and didnāt know it meant a scholarship so told him to just attend CC like kids from his HS, that itād be cheaper and heād figure out what heād want to major in.
Later (too late), he found out about the full tuition scholarship heād have been eligible for as a freshmanā¦and no longer was as a transfer. He had to pay 2 years of full tuition plus R&B because his test score no longer mattered. Thatās for a US resident, in state, for state flagship, with top test scores - most favorable situation. Imagine for an international transferā¦
No, youād apply in January 2025 before WAEC, mentioning theyāre equivalent to OāLevels, something this level or boarding schools must be used to.
For the US, youād be considered a 10th grader due to age. The level of courses youāre taking is individualized - some 16 year olds are taking multivariable calculus and some 16 year olds are taking Algebra2a, theyāre all in high school. A Levels and IB are not considered college or Uni but HS for very advanced students (which youād be). Some 9th graders, such as those at the boarding schools mentioned, are taking what would junior and senior level classes for āregularā students.
You could ask them preventively
That may be worth thinking about. Really not sure. I Donāt know whether itād attract attention to a minor point in your whole application or reassure wrt a question thatād block your acceptance.
Lowk thank God because I wasnāt even wanting to go down that route
Jesus
Thats rough
oh
Yeah
Thats the thing Iāll just out it just incase, and Iāll talk with the schools Iāve already applied to if we can work things out like that, thank you!
Letās think about it before you do something - no hurry since everyone in the US (at colleges at least) is on holiday.
Apparently, young-ish applicants from Nigeria are sort of a thing. I vaguely remembered a similar situation from several years ago and did a bit of digging:
Amherst vs Dartmouth - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums
The OP in that thread had just turned 16 and was much further in the admissions process (she was already in the RD round with two acceptances.)
The age issue barely registered.
Iāve done lots of impulsive things during this process I can calm down for a little while
Thank you so much youāve just removed a very heavy weight from my shoulders
Also that girl is a queen cuz its not easy I wanted to pm her but she hasnāt been on here since 2022
but anyways sheās given me hope. Idk if she was based in Nigeria or just from Nigeria as her post says. I also couldnt find her sat score and if she went test optional and all that for Lafayette (which is now on my list, replacing Howard or st olaf
) or if she took aps or IBs (if she was based in Nigeria, she probably would not have cuz she mentioned she was low income and those things are pricey. If she was based in the US tho, she probably would have). I canāt for the life of me figure out how to view membersā former threads or even find them on this website, so I guess I wonāt know until google helps meā¦or she may not have even had other threads listing those stuff
. I wont be messaging any colleges regarding this I guess Thank you so much!
It was not meant as a roast. There are 15 year olds who get a 1600 on the SAT. There are 15 year olds who get a 1250, who will later on get a 1600 early in their senior year. And there are 15 year olds who get a 1250 in 10th grade, and donāt do any better by the end of high school.
I donāt think that you should put another penny into applications this year. You mention amounts in Nigerian currency, and those amounts are burdensome for your mother, but theyāre pennies compared to the cost of college in the US - and right now, I donāt think that your record is going to win acceptance to selective colleges in the US, let alone a full ride. But I do think that if you were to come to relatives in the US and attend a high school with honors and AP sections, did 10th,11th, and 12th here, that you could be very well-prepared for college, and get into some excellent schools with a full ride.
Even in not good inner city school districts in some rough cities in the US, there is usually at least one high school in every city that has a magnet honors high school program that offers an excellent education. If you tell us the cities where you have relatives, we can guide you on how to get into those high schools.
Just because you have started down the road to college applications at the age of 15, does not mean that you need to continue. Your chances of getting a full ride at a good college in the US right now are pretty much nil. If you move to the US and start 10th grade at a good high school (one which offers tons of AP classes or the IB program, done well), you can establish the record that you need to get that full ride.
Yes. Never act impulsively in this process. Always give yourself a few hours before you press send on a message to a college.
Iāve been thinking about your idea of mentioning your age and the solution and my most logical guess is that most Nigerian applicants from public schools would go with just WAEC/NECO when they apply so these US colleges would be familiar with the school system⦠and itās impact on student age. As a result, it seems to me that you should have a good answer if they contact you about it but you shouldnāt use space on your application to bring it into focus.
Bad news : Lafayette has no CSS Fee Waiver and doesnāt take the ISFAA.
Hello,
Iām also just like you. A Nigerian looking to leave this country. Got rejected from Wellesley
My aunt is in South Carolina Oxford, other one is Maryland.
I know everything you said is mostly true, but i donāt think its understood that just because I started I canāt stop. I literally have to. Scenario: I donāt finish applying, then when my parents ask, Iāll tell them I stopped cuz I had a really slim chance (something Iāve known since I started) and then when app season is over I tell them, oh, remember how I told you I was gonna apply then half assed it, yeah I want to move to the US now and go back four years, just gimme 8mil. If i didnāt finish plan A, whatās the guarantee Iām not going to go to the US as a hs student and become a hoodlum Iām not spending any money rn on application, that part has been done and thereās nothing I can do about it. Iāll apply, get rejected or get accepted, or get acceptance somewhere in the EU, and then Iāll do something with the outcome. Thank you!
Noted
Yep! iāll think of something if they contact me, if they donāt tho, Itāll be left the way it is
I know but iāmā¦working for that money, their app deadline is on the 15th so I have a little time i think. Quick question tho, Lafayette, Conn College and Middlebury which one should I acc apply to. I have one spot on my list and they all have a css fee that Iām willing to pay (if i get the money, if i donātā¦oh well
)
Thank you!
hi maybe wellesley doesnāt like us
pls pm me, Iām quite literally the only person I know of thats applying to the US this year in like 5 schools (save nepo babies who get their apps written for them that is
donāt mind me, Iām poor and bitter
)
