**This Summer I’m planning on going to the CSLC Summer program thing, is that good, does it look good for college apps or is it just a waste of time?
I’m also planning on doing some kind of research project/internship thing at my Uncle’s practice, would that be a good idea too?
**
Senior year, Im just going to run for every position I can pretty much lol and I think I should win at least a couple, Ill also be joining the Cross Country and Track Teams

Ethnicity: Asian(from Pakistan, moved here almost 4 years ago)

Income Bracket:really really low unless you include my brother

Legacy: Dunno if it counts but my brother and first cousin went to Yale

Also, my high school is ranked in the top 1% of the nation, I think that probably makes a difference too but I dont know.

You must be one smart cookie to have the GPA that you do from such a good high school. I’m afraid I agree with you and you should retake the SATs. Your scores are good but not great. Your ECs read a little too much like a long list. You need to pick a few of them and present them in a way that shows that you were a standout in that group. For the ones that you weren’t a standout in that may not be possible, but hopefully for some it is. Being Asian will hurt you. They are overrepresented at the top schools. Legacy will help and you should apply early decision. Yale is need blind so being low income won’t hurt you and your brother’s income won’t factor into it, only your parents and yours. That’s good because you will need financial aid which you will get from a school like Yale.

Thanks Pea. So I guess concentrate on getting the SATs up and somehow better round the ECs?

More input would be tight and can someone answer the questions in bold?

“Going to have to pull that ■■■■ up” lol, but true- aim for a 2250 or up and you’ll be okay w/ your SATs. And, for the record, joining the track team senior year won’t really do anything for your chances; it won’t hurt them, but its not going to help if that’s what you’re thinking. Also try to bring community service to 200+ hours. And you’re right— you need to round out your ECs. What’s your interest? I’m assuming law since you want to intern at your uncle’s practice…

Why wouldn’t joining the track team help senior year? Is it because season starts pretty much after College Apps are sent in?

And are community service hours really that important? Its a pain trying to find a place to volunteer at and the ridiculous jobs they give you is even worse…

How could I better round out my ECs? What should I do? And my uncle’s a doctor, and I dont really know what I want to major in or anything…

What scrivener meant was that joining in your senior year wouldn’t improve your chances of getting in because Yale won’t really weight it that heavily since you only did it your senior year.

That said, if you like track you should still definitely join, but if you’re joining for college admissions purposes you shouldn’t.

^^ that is what I meant- sorry about the confusion. And HYP likes to see your ECs (generally) focused in one area, and they like to see that you have a passion. It is almost a cliche here, but the common advice is: show them your passion. If you have none, then you’re in trouble

Yea, that is alot of AP’s in just one year…my school gives 5 at maximum per year for juniors and seniors so a total of 10 AP’s max…but you got 8 AP’s in just one year…that is f****** crazy…But i hope you realize the responsiblity with that…its not just about showing but also doing…so you’re gonna have to do good in the classes…and cut down on the EC’s…its just a laundry list…i dont know if im much of a competition but i have only 4-5 which i deeply was involved in since freshmen year…that summer program should help so do that…and so should that internship…also no offense but you need to bring up ur SAT scores (i shouldn’t be talking since i only got a 196/240 on my 10th grade PSAT’s)

wait…um i just got my report card today and i don’t think i did that well…but i got 2 B+'s and the rest A’s…im a sophmore and last year, my freshmen year, i got one more B+…is that gonna hurt my chances at Yale or any other IVY?

scrivener:

are u sure about this? Becuz I’m heavily involved with my school band and another outside band. Both bands participate in numerous competitions and concerts, and altogether I have around 4-5 band practices a week. Plus I have leadership too haha. But when I look at ppl’s stats, they have what I have PLUS sports, science clubs and bla bla bla So I’m afraid that yale would just look at me as a band geek, while everyone else as an all rounder even though my commitment and passion really lies in music… Anyone have any opinions?

CSLC - That’s some kind of Leadership Conference, right? You got a letter in the mail asking you to attend? There’s a fee to attend, right? If this is one of those groups, I’m not sure it carries much weight with the ivies. Maybe it’ll be good for lower tier schools. I think they see through those “for profit” programs as resume padding. Not sure though. Anyone attend any of these programs and get into Yale?

I’m sure people have attended these programs and gotten into Yale. But I’m also sure that no one has gotten into Yale BECAUSE of these programs.
