Chance me from OREGON!

ok i moved my senior year from ny to oregon.
male; asian
3.451 weighted gpa
5 APs, 1 IB
164/423…rank at old school before moving was 56/322
650 cr, 640 m, 530w
50 volunteer hours at hospital + 20 additional community service hours

Thanks everyone.

your w gpa is low and so is your rank for your new school which is the one they will use as a decision. Your SAT is strong.

I would put you at 50-50 only because of your gpa, but Oregon may help you. I would think that you would at least get spring admit.

If you had said that the 3.451 was your uw, I would have said in, but because it is w, even on a .5 scale for w, it really pulls you down with 6 courses, it would seem that at that weight you pulled on average b’s and c’s throughout your hs career. What it says to UMD is you have the brains and ability based on your SAT scores, but not the drive or dedication to work at school…this would be a blaring signal to them. Schools would typically rather have a kid that the grades and the SATs match up because freshmen yr when you are let loose from your folks and can skip classes without the folks knowing, places the kid who does not have that academic work ethic as the ones that typically get placed on academic probation. Their goal is to get the highest caliber of students that will graduate.

Also, you are an ORM at UMDCP which works against you, however again you are from Oregon and they want to expand their national exposure. If you were still in NY I would have said that it would have been a reach.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Hello from another Oregonian! Brr, it’s cold outside, isn’t it?!

I agree with bulletandpima that your GPA is a little low, but I think being from Oregon will help you. What major are you looking at?

My son is a sophomore at UMD majoring in journalism. He’s really happy there, and despite some headaches involved in transporting him to/from home, it’s been a great fit.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I believe my unweighted GPA is a 3.1 or 3.2. I agree, definitely on the low side. I’ll check tomorrow to make sure what it is, and post more stats that might be of help.

Both my parents went to the University of Maryland for medical school. Does this still count as legacy?

Yes quite chilly. I’m going to major in Kinesiological Sciences, and minor in Chinese if possible.

You are double legacy, however, legacies are not necessarily hooks that will help you get in. They are hooks if the folks are $$$ donors.
