Hello everyone, I wanted to gauge my changes for Ga Tech especially since I know out of state is very competitive.

Demographics

Male ( US citizen) NC

Intended Major(s) Aerospace/ Mechanical

Academics :

Unweighted gpa 3.7 ( low end)

Weighted 4.22

Classes taken 5 Aps 10 honors and 2 Dual Enrollment.

AP Lang APUSH, AP Bio, APWH, AP CSP

I’ve taken math 2 , 3 , pre calc , calc, and physics ( all honors)

I’ve taken both Ma 111 and Ma 141 through dual enrollment at NCSU and I have done really well in both. This upcoming semester I’ll be taking Ma 241 ( calc 2) Soc 202 and E 102

SAT have not taken yet but hoping for a 1450/1500

Extracurriculars (ECs)

Member of Civil Air Patrol for 3 years ( serve as my squadron aerospace NCO teaching aerospace topics have earned both Billy Mitchell and Wright Brothers awards both nationally recognized.

Youth leader at my Hindu temple for the past 5 years

Coach for those with disabilities for the past 3 years.

Founder of UNICEF Club at my school and outreach coordinator. We’ve done several school wide donation drives and events.

Student Ambassador for my school.

Part of MSEN program ( Math Science Engineering Networking program ) for the past 6 years. Through this program have done coding, robotics.

Varsity track member for 1 year.

Did a business internship last year( looked into solving an issue effecting an actual business and brainstormed a solution)

Current participating in a summer long paid internship with my states Department of Environmental Quality ( were I’ve actually worked to help assist on real world projects)

Selected to attended Tarheel Boys state and was elected senator by my peers.

Selected to be part of my towns first ever youth council ( help lead and crate council bylaws)

Just a general member of NHS and Student Council.

Mitchell Award Civil Air Patrol only 15% of cadets in the program ever obtain this. Should you choose to enlist in the military this award allows to enter as an E-3

Your background is very impressive but I think you need to repost this after you have an SAT score.

GaTech is a reach for OOS applicants. Keep up the good work, apply, and see what happens.

As I tell all applicants, be sure to craft a well balanced application list with reach, match, and safety schools that appear affordable and that you would be excited to attend.

Are you a rising senior? When are you taking an SAT?

How many non-A core course grades do you have?

Have your taken chem? Foreign language?

Yes rising senior. I have 7 non A grades and I have taken a foreign language being Spanish for 2 years. My school does not offer chem unfortunately.

Are these all B’s? Regardless, I don’t see a Tech OOS admit happening, but obviously it’s ok to apply to some reaches. Do you want suggestions for the rest of your list?

Was this thru Spanish 2? If your school offers it and you intend on applying to schools with below 20% acceptance rates, I would encourage you to take Spanish 3.

Is it an option to take DE chem?

Through Dual enrollment it’s possible to take Chem but since I am talking ma 241 ( calc 2) I was advised to not take chem at the same time. I can potentially take chem second semester of senior year. Yes all the grades are Bs the lowest is a 87.

Georgia Tech as a non-resident will be a reach.

Have you considered applying to Purdue and to NC State ? Virginia Tech ?

I’ve definitely considered NCSU and Virginia Tech but not so much Purdue mainly due to how far it is.

What about UMD? Many engineering students consider it similar to Purdue. Its engineering programs are highly ranked, and it’s an easier admission than Georgia Tech.

Yea UMD is one the schools that I’m looking at right now especially considering its aerospace and me program.

Georgia Tech admissions is major specific, with both aerospace & mechanical engineering being a couple of most competitive, along with computer science. A 3.7 GPA (A-) with a < 1400 SAT score & OOS; will be difficult to gain acceptance.

I was hoping for a 1450 or 1500 minimum on Sat but you are right about the gpa

I don’t think Tech is a possibility and while you don’t have an SAT yet, even a Purdue would be unlikely. You’ll need a very good score to get UMD and even NC State. It doesn’t mean not to try.

You don’t have to major in aero to do aero. You can do Mech E and add aero elements. Or simply do MechE. My son interned at car companies, had car activities and yet works for an aero company.

Where else to look - including the Va Tech, NC State, UMD others mentioned - and I don’t know your budget - and I’m not sure which states or areas might be comfortable for being Hindu.

But here’s some others - less competitive. Where you go undergrad for engineering likely matters little - it’s a degree where Michigan and W MIchigan kids work side by side, where salaries are similar from top to not so top schools and believe it or not, Ga Tech has a very high not employed rate while others, like an Alabama, get data from more kids and have a much higher employed rate. So find a school that fits you vs. looking at rankings.

If Purdue is too far for the OP, all the colleges in the northeast are going to be too far. In the colleges the OP listed, Georgia Tech, NCSU, VA Tech, all have separate aero departments, as does Purdue, which does have a higher out-of-state admit rate, but then you have to apply to to the specific major after your first year. As others have said, without the SAT score, it would be hard chance for an engineering major. You really need to get above 1500 to be competitive for top Aero programs.

Definitely take Chem one of the two semesters, you would be at a considerable disadvantage in applications without it.

Your profile looks stronger than the 3.7 UW GPA alone might suggest. The combination of Calc/Physics, NCSU coursework, Civil Air Patrol aerospace leadership, MSEN, and the environmental engineering internship gives you a pretty coherent engineering story.

The biggest unknown is the SAT. If you can get into the 1450–1500 range, that would certainly help, but I wouldn’t treat Georgia Tech as a likely simply because of the rest of the profile. OOS engineering is extremely competitive.

I’d also make sure your essays explain why aerospace/mechanical engineering and connect your experiences rather than just listing accomplishments.

Overall, I’d put Georgia Tech firmly in the reach category, but definitely worth applying. Your ECs are substantial enough that I wouldn’t self-reject because of the 3.7 UW.

GT no longer has any supplemental essay. The Common App personal statement is the only essay. Would it make sense for an applicant to tailor the personal statement essay for their GT app? Does GT need to see a connection, especially where it is fairly obvious based on ECs? Or, should an applicant think, if GT really wanted a Why Major/Why Us essay, they wouldn’t have removed the supplement?

I think that one applies for a certain major is all they need to know. There needn’t be a connection.
