Chance me!? Hopeful CC transfer to UCLA/UCB/UCSB?

I applied as a transfer student from a CC from the Orange County area.

-I would rate my personal statement (reviewed by others) as a 9/10.
-I would say that my extra currics were pretty solid: founded/president of successful community service club on campus, won several awards for the club, well recognized by school, worked with organizations that focused on minorities (Afghans in Health programs), in honors programs at school
-In the TAP certification program for UCLA.
-Major: Political Science with an emphasis on International Relations
-If it matters, my ethnicity is Afghan-American, specifically…first generation.
-53 acquired credits so far (taking more classes right now), have dropped one class
-Plan to graduate with 20 honors units (have 13 right now)

Transcript posted below…please chance me if you can! It is truly appreciated.

My CC GPA is 3.64 and my calculated UC GPA is 3.69.

GPA: 3.64

(Calculated UC GPA: 3.698)

UC system doesn’t really care for honors, so this probably screwed up your GPA more than having any real benefit in terms of admission. Looks like most of your honors classes are Bs, so it would have been better to take them as non-honors and maybe get an A. Anyway, if you get all As this semester you’ll have good chances to get in to all of the UCs. If your GPA would be the same, around 3.65 then UCLA and UCB are questionable.

But for TAP UCLA you have to take honors classes. That is why I took them… it some sort of “90% admittance” guarantee program/contract that many local CCs have with UCLA.

@Moshe1010‌ So wouldn’t it be more of a gain than a loss…if I wanted to get into UCLA?

I will say as a UCLA TAP student, and with your community service/leadership, etc. you stand a pretty good shot at UCLA, even though your GPA is slightly low (although not sure what Poli sci competitive GPA is). The internat’l major angle works nicely with your Com service.

I am going to say yes with UCLA, UCB slightly more iffy just because of GPA (but they’re more holistic, which is in your favor). It may help somewhat that you’re African American, as they are making an effort to be diverse. First gen will definitely be a good factor.

Ah hell, I think yes for all three. You seem like a candidate they would want.

Moshe is way off on this…

First off, he/she says getting all As this semester would make you less “questionable,” but the UCs don’t even assess this semester’s grades in your application.

Second, completing TAP gives you a significant advantage over everyone else applying to UCLA, as you said. I suspect your odds are close to that of the overall TAP acceptance rate, which you say is 90%.

I’d say your odds are about the same for UCSB. UCB is a bit of a tossup. Your grades are average by their standards, though you do have good subjective qualities, so you’re definitely competitive. Other than that, no one can really say.

The TAP advisors probably have a better idea of your chances than random people on the internet. Have you spoken with them?

Thank you so much for inputting your opinion. I thoroughly appreciate it! And I have spoken to the TAP advisors at my school…they are not helpful at all. They just tell me that my chances are good with a 3.5 gpa or above…and that’s about it. @lindyk8‌ @mikemac‌

@music1990‌ Yes, that’s exactly what I have heard…a 90% chance of getting in…which is very, very high in my opinion, considering the school is UCLA.

Your GPA, along with TAP makes you very competitive for UCLA, and I say this as a former member of my CC’s TAP program. Berkeley doesn’t care for UCLA’s TAP program, though, so your chances of getting in there don’t seem to be as good, but you have good ECs, so I’d say you’re still somewhat competitive for Berkeley.

I’ll agree that Berkeley is a tossup.

I’m also from Orange County and I’m a polisci major at Cal (with an emphasis on Methods). Best of luck!

Ayyy, fellow Afghan.

With TAP, you have a good chance for UCLA. If you look at the average GPA for admitted students for your major in Fall 2014, it’s 3.75 so you’re probably within a standard deviation.

@ocnative‌ I believe you answered one of my posts from a while back as well! And thank you for your input.

@Cayton‌ And yes, I’ve gotten that quite a lot…hopefully my ECs work in favor…as they are also what may have eroded my GPA a bit! Thank you for your input as well!

Ayyyeee, singa yeh? Hahaa. Tashakoor!

And yes, the problem with whole ‘chancing’ is falling within the average…makes it more intense than it should be.

Did you apply for UCLA/UCB as well?

Haha, I don’t know pashto very well, only farsi.
Qabule tashakor nest

I think you have a really good chance though since UCLA has that holistic thing going too. And you’re in Orange County.

I applied to UCB, UCSB, and UCSD for computer science. Also TAG to Davis. Hoping for Berkeley though.

Hahha.
And yay…I truly hope so…been super stressed out about it.

And considering we are a micro ‘minority’ we definitely have a little bit of a boost in the realm of admission consideration.

What was your GPA? It would have to be pretty high for Computer Science! I think 3.8 + would be preferable for all of those schools.

Yeah, I’ve been worrying too. April 24th for Berkeley is so long ):
My GPA is luckily a 4.0
I’m hoping Berkeley, especially since it’s so close to home.
