*** Chance me!!!! I will chance back!! ***

Hi everyone. I just want to start off by saying THESE ARE NOT MY SCORES! They’re not projected, they are the stats of someone I know.
SAT: 2400 (not superscored, first take)
PSAT: 227
ACT: didn’t take
SAT II: Math II (800), USH (750), Bio M (800), Chem (800), Chinese (790)
UWGPA: 3.9
WGPA: 4.5
AP: Biology (5), APUSH (4), Physics (5), chemistry (5), calculus BC (5), Computer science (5), government (3), economics (2), Lang and comp (5), literature (5), psychology (5)
(As you can see he absolutely hates history, but I don’t know if colleges can see AP test scores.)

Awards: AP scholar thingy, National merit society finalist (the award that uses your PSAT and essay), clarinet competition awards

ECs: clarinet (7 years), first chair clarinet in school band, outside other bands, marching band (4 years), marching band sectional leader, music competitions, leader and founder of a school music club

Job experience: Summer intern for his county in computer science (10), Summer intern for computer engineering company (11)

Volunteering: 300+ hours at a children’s science center

He wants to major in computer science or electrical engineering and minor in video game design.
Could you please tell me what schools he could get into? Does he have a shot at Ivys? What about UCs? Thank you so much. If you want me to chance you back, please put a link under your response.

Yes, especially with all the AP classes and volunteer work at the children’s science center.

His scores definitely are impressive, and his ECs are good. However, he sounds like many other Ivy applicants! His internship is somewhat unique though, and one thing colleges love is dedication, which he seems to bring to his music. I think he has a fair chance at the Ivies, and a good chance at the UCs, though if he’s out of state, I’m not quite sure…good luck to him!

Chance me too!

Home State and residency? How much can the family afford? Need financial aid?

Does he live in CA? UC schools tend to admit more students in-state versus out of state. However based on the information above, I’d say he’d be admitted to all of the UC schools including UCLA and Berkeley. It does sound like he has a shot at the ivies. The “lower ivies” (Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell) will most likely be easier to get into statistically speaking. From there the “middle ivies” (UPenn and Columbia), and finally the “upper ivies” (HYP). The ivies are basically a crapshoot. There are many people who apply with the same impressive stats and not all of them are accepted. In order to get into an ivy, he needs to make himself stand apart from other candidates. This can be shown in EC’s, internship, etc. Also, I think it’s very important to communicate how much he wants to attend (insert ivy school) in the supplement essays. You can’t just say “I want to attend ___ because it’s my dream school”. He and every other kid applying is likely to feel the same way. He needs to find a way when he writes to bring his words to life and show admissions that he wants to be at ___ because of whatever reason. If he’s looking at an ivy just for the prestige only and namesake, look somewhere else. Why attend a college that doesn’t have what you’re interested in? As for other colleges apart from UCs and ivies, I think he can get into a top college (ex: Rice, USC, etc.). Other schools that equate to the ivies in my opinion are: Stanford, UChicago, etc. Has he considered those schools too?

I would appreciate if you looked at mine:

@Gumbymom He is a California resident with zero hooks. His family is middle class, but he needs for financial aid because he has siblings

Since he lives in California he probably has a pretty good chance at all of the UCs. Of course, Ivies are always a crapshoot and you can’t really speculate much but he is definitely a strong applicant.
