I know my essays and letters of recommendations will both be pretty stellar, the only thing that is holding me back is unfortunately my GPA.
- Loyola University
- U of I
- Marquette University
- UIC
- Benedictine University
- NIU
- DePaul University
- Purdue Indiana University
- North Central College
- Illinois State University
- Ohio State University
- Ann Arbor (REACH)
I live in Illinois btw if that helps!
Here is what I think.
- North Central College & Illinois State University
- Benedictine University & UIC & NIU
- Loyola University & DePaul University
- Marquette University & Purdue Indiana University
- Ohio State University
- University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (Large Reach for Engineering and Business)
- University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (Very Large Reach for all majors)
This list may seem simple; however, the gaps between each number differ significantly. University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is going to be extremely difficult to gain acceptance into. UMich emphasizes the GPA and it is becoming a highly selective school to gain admission. If you are applying for Business or Engineering, the acceptance rate is much lower than the overall acceptance rate. Being OOS will make it even harder. This year, Ross School of Business and the College of Engineering had acceptance rates very similar to those of Ivy League schools and other prestigious universities.
U of I will not be easy to get into, especially for engineering. However, being instate helps quite a bit.
Ohio State University will be more difficult to get into because you are OOS than usual. However, I knew a person who got accepted with a GPA similar to yours.
Focus on gaining acceptance into your top choices. Make sure to visit to get an idea of which school is the best fit for you.
If there is an external factor contributing to your low GPA, you can write about it to the school. The admissions officers will take it into account. It is good that you have a high ACT score because this will help balance the low GPA somewhat, but not entirely.
Good luck for the college process! I feel relieved to get it over with finally!
Thank you so much. what a relief to get a reassuring answer!! I agree, Ann Arbor is definitely a reach, but I thought I might as well apply since my siblings went there
@kishanp09
I think it is a reach as well, but i know that depaul gives scholarships to high test scores! Chance me back!
Make your essays stellar and I think all of those schools can be matches/low reaches for you, despite your low GPA. Have you thouhht aboht retaking the ACT/SAT? Having a higher score definitely helps make up for a weakness in GPA as well.
I think UMich is a low reach given your essays are as good as you say they are ,you improve your standerdized testing scores, and you claim legacy status.

@PinkManatee UMich a low reach? I’d call it out of reach, with a 0.1% chance due to legacy and that ACT score.
OP’s ACT score is good, but it isn’t going to be a point in his/her favor at UMich. It just won’t be a strike against him/her, given the out-of-state midrange of 31-35 (IIRC).
The ECs don’t look too bad, but OP’s GPA is a 2.8. That’s more than a full point below the UMich average of 3.85. It isn’t going to fly. A typical UMich student is an A- student with a 32 ACT and good extracurriculars. For OOS applicants, the ACT is higher and the student will very nearly be a straight-A student.
What makes you think Michigan would choose a B- student with average extracurriculars over the above profile?
I agree with the above. U Mich is extremely competitive and your gpa really sticks out of the middle and lower profiles for the school. For engineering majors and business majors UIC is also going to be reach with your UW gpa but I think your standardized testing is a really big plus. Make sure your essays are killer because they could be the difference between admission and rejection.
Chance me too?

Your unweighted GPA may hurt your chances, but overall you look like a competitive applicant due to your high ACT composite. The schools you are applying for are a bit competitive, I would strongly encouraging looking at some less competitive schools to add to that list. I’m in a similar situation as you are (a few low marks), but if you’re not only applying to highly-competitive schools then you should be fine! Good luck on admissions!
The GPA DePaul gives as an average is skewed heavily by it’s selective Theater School. With your stats, you’re likely going to get in.
Don’t stress it too much. DePaul is very generous with it’s admissions decisions and will likely give you the benefit of the doubt.
