Congratulations on making yourself a strong applicant! I don’t know enough about the industrial design programs at those specific schools, but did you have to submit a portfolio for any of them? If so, I don’t think anyone online can chance you, as the portfolio is usually a major factor in admissions decisions.

If a portfolio was not required, I’d expect you to get into U. of Cincinnati and I think you’d have at least a 50/50 shot at Purdue and maybe at U. of Washington. Georgia Tech, CMU, and Stanford are the definite reaches here. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were admitted to all of them as you are a strong candidate, but the majority of strong candidates do not get an acceptance because those schools have far more strong applicants than they have spots.

Wishing you the best of luck!

I agree. But CMU likes full pay international students, so that should give you a boost.

Yes, they like them, but CMU is need blind. The decisions are made by the design faculty anyway, so it’s all about the strength of your portfolio

Not true. They are only need blind for US citizens and permanent residents.

All international students there are paying full price. Are you suggesting that CMU has a quota of how many international students to admit to increase their bottom line and thus different admissions standards for international vs the US students? Otherwise your statement that “CMU likes full pay international students, so that should give you a boost” is unsubstantiated

Read my statement in context (post #3). I was saying, compared to OP’s other reaches, he will get a boost at CMU as a full-pay international applicant.

Since this point is not central to what OP is asking, if you have further comments or questions let’s take them to PM so as not to derail OP’s thread.

The central point of the OP post was to chance him and I don’t believe that this statement of yours is correct.

Since debating is disallowed by forum rules we can disagree and move on.

Hi, thank you for the response. Yes I did have to submit a portfolio, but based on my stats and ECs, how much of a chance do you think I have on those reaches, especially GT and Stanford? Do you thing having a slightly less competitive major like Design will increase my chances?

Your stats are within range for these schools, but whether industrial design as a major is going to help you will depend almost entirely on your portfolio.

Best of luck to you and it’d be great if you let us know how things turn out!
