Essays/LORs/Other

I’m not really sure how strong my essays will be compared to other applicants, but I tried to talk about experiences that I felt were somewhat unique on my CommonApp and MIT essays. For MIT, I talked about my love for learning languages for my hobby essay, I discussed my path towards starting clubs (I mentioned my interest in joining certain clubs at MIT that did similar activities and talked about club that I wanted to start at MIT as well) for my trailblazing essay, I talked about my interest in general biology and how BWSI influenced my to change my primary major to computational biology in my major essay, I talked about connecting with students from around the world through Schoolhouse World and eventually teaming up with other Schoolhouse tutors to start a nonprofit for the contributing to community essay (I did not list Schoolhouse on my application), and I talked about an incident that happened on the first day of classes for a nonprofit program (I didn’t list the program on my MIT application) for which I had started volunteering as a student teaching assistant in my challenge essay. I wrote a few paragraphs on the MIT additional information section about certain classes I wanted to take at MIT, clubs that I wanted to join, and certain professors and labs that I wanted to research under/in (and a few other things specific to MIT that I like).

I have a recommendation from my AP Biology teacher from my sophomore year, who is also an advisor for the Pre-Med Club I started at my school and the USABO chapter and Science Competitions Club. I also have a recommendation letter from my AP Econ teacher in my sophomore year, who I have really been able to interact with out of class, and with whom I have been able to have various meaningful conversations about activities I do outside of school. Both of these teachers have written several recommendation letters for me before (for summer program applications), so I think these recommendations will be strong).

I have interacted with my counselor a lot since my freshman year, since
I have had to register for some dual enrollment courses that nobody at my school has taken before, and my counselor told me that he talked a lot about taking initiative and having intellectual curiosity, so I think my counselor recommendation will also be relatively strong.

For the MIT application, I got a supplemental recommendation from my violin teacher, who has taught me for over 10 years. I am also planning on asking for a supplemental recommendation from my instructor for the BWSI course. I think this recommendation will be good as well, since I was an active participant in lectures and problem solving sessions.

I will be submitting music supplements for violin and cultural/world music that I sing/play as part of my application, so I also have recommendation letters from each of my music teachers (for each instrument/supplement) for those.

Cost Constraints / Budget
Looking for college that will give me lots of scholarship money/financial aid- hopefully under $20,000/year

Schools (note- these rankings are somewhat based off of Collegevine, other than the reaches)

  • Safety *
    University of Cincinnati

  • Likely (would be possible, but very unlikely or surprising, for it not to admit or be affordable)
    Ohio State University

  • Match *
    Case Western Reserve University
    Wellesley
    Boston University

  • Reach *
    MIT
    Harvard
    UPenn
    Columbia
    Johns Hopkins
    Dartmouth
    Brown
    Princeton
    Yale
    Stanford
    Cornell

MIT is my dream college, so any chancing particularly for MIT would be really appreciated

Have you run the Net Price Calculator (NPC) for your various schools? Because you certainly are a competitive applicant, but many of your reach schools don’t give merit money, only need-based aid.

Try the net price calculator on the web site of each college of interest.

Start with Princeton. If you’re not getting any need based aid from them, then it’s unlikely you’ll get any from anyone else.

Here is the Princeton and MIT NPC. Your folks, not you, should fill out.

You’re fabulous but applying to need aid only schools doesn’t work if they won’t meet your cost. The NPC will tell you.

Worst case, you have in state schools plus others like Alabama and Ms State and more who will meet your cost.

You can certainly get into all schools mentioned and I suspect you will into one or more. But if not at budget, then it’s a kick in the gut.

So you need safer. Bryn Mawr on top of Wellesley.

Case Western, Rochester and Mismi on top of Hopkins and the Ivies etc.

You might try some full ride schools too - W&L, SMU, and more.

But if your expected cost is more than budget, you’ll need those aggressive publics as a likely in case back stop.

Good luck

Thank you! I did run the NPC for the schools that I am applying to, and I believe they do fall into my family’s budget.

That’s good to hear. It’s hard to predict admissions at these schools, but you seem like a very competitive applicant.

You will hear from some of these schools within a month, so just hang in there.

Best wishes! We would love to hear any updates as admission decisions come in.

As I noted above, I’d add others that still meet need but are down a tier - like Bryn Mawr, Miami (( FL), Rochester etc as examples - unless you are good with tOSU, a fine school btw.

You could very well get into one or more of your list but it’s a very heavy list. You are a fine student but you just never know.

I’ll add - some schools specifically ask for later (junior) teachers so a sophomore teacher at some may not hold as much weight. So check each school’s policy. Both of yours are so that could be problematic - school dependent.

Best of luck.

That’s great. I think your chances at Wellesley are excellent. I would echo @tsbna44’s advice that if you are in the market for a small-ish, intellectually distinguished, private college, there are a huge number of them that do not have the daunting, single-digit acceptance rates of MIT. Wesleyan University (not to be confused with Wellesley), in Connecticut, will be opening a brand-new Life Sciences building in 2026:
New Science Building - Wesleyan University

I got deferred from MIT and CWRU, but I got into OSU. I ended up applying to WashU and UNC Chapel Hill in addition to the other schools on my list (with the exception of Stanford, which I wasn’t as interested in attending).

Congrats on Ohio State. Fine school. I don’t know what type of in state merit there is but curren tuition, room and board is about $28k.

Is the school affordable to you ?

I am a finalist for their Stamps Eminence scholarship, so if I do get selected as a scholar, I would be attending free-of-cost with a stipend.

Awesome. But if not, is it affordable ?

Good luck but you need plan C just in case. And there are some out there so don’t worry.

Good luck on Stamps!!

Thank you! Without Stamps, OSU would not be affordable, but I will be able to go to UC (University of Cincinnati) for free

When will you hear on Stamps? How have you done with others?

I’m not sure when I will hear from Stamps, but it will probably be sometime in the next few weeks. I have only been accepted by OSU and UC and waitlisted by NU and WashU so far (for RD). The rest of my decisions are coming out in the next two weeks.

I love you have UC. Best of luck with the others.

Best of luck at nail biting time.

Are you a National Merit Finalist?

Thank you! Yes, I am a National Merit Finalist

Have you looked at Bama (five years feee tuition, four yeas housing, plus a yearly stipend) or Tulsa - free??

Then you have zero $$ concerns.

Those are the golden ticket and both fine schools. Takes all your $$ risk away.

I read above you want small. Hello Tulsa. Great school. Free for you !!!

A quarter plus of their most recent class was NM. Tons of smart kids.
