Your profile is genuinely strong, especially given your limited resources and lack of AP/IB options.
The software agency, freelance work, nonprofit, datacenter internship, hackathons, and caregiving give you a compelling story.
I’d still treat MIT/Stanford/Harvard/Caltech as very high reaches, but absolutely apply. Your essays should focus on impact and how you think, not just listing achievements.
Also add some financially realistic options—getting admitted without enough aid won’t help with a $15–20k/year budget.
I would retake the ACT if your math or science scores are below 34, given your planned major of applied math and/or computer science. I would recommend taking the optional science if you can score 34+, given that you aren’t able to submit any AP, IB, or Cambridge scores, especially for some of your “extreme reach” schools like Caltech & MIT.
Your current list of colleges look good. As an international applicant, you are encouraged to apply to 20+ or 25 colleges. Many colleges restrict international enrollment to roughly 10% of the class.
In my opinion, you should not ED anywhere. In most cases REA doesn’t give an admissions advantage. Since you need significant financial aid to attend any of these U.S. colleges, it might be in your better interest to apply RD to them all…hope for multiple acceptances and net costs to compare. Even with meets full need colleges, the amount of your net cost will vary.
Some of your colleges are need aware so your ability to pay could be considered when your admissions application is reviewed.
You appear to be a strong student, but you are an international student applying to U.S. colleges from a country were a LOT of students apply to U.S. colleges.
But you can’t get accepted if you don’t apply. As long as you have an affordable sure thing for admission, you are fine.
I’m going to echo retaking the ACT. Some of the universities on your list are test required and while you have a very solid score, it’s not in the ballpark for MIT/CalTech type schools.
You can check the Common Data Sets for the schools on your list and see their ranges for standardized tests. If you are below the 25% for a school that has an under 15% acceptance rate, it would be a very very long shot, especially for an international applicant.
I think you’ll have a better chance of admission with the LACs on your list but not sure if they will meet your budget.
Also as noted, be sure you have some affordable highly likely schools on your list first and foremost.
Unfortunately you have a few things working against you.
Your budget - it will depend on how the schools determine your affordability but it will be very hard for an international student to get accepted at the payment level you can make - really anywhere
Your ACT is 3-4 points low for the MITs of the world.
I think you could get into Grinnell, Whitman, Denison and Reed. But I don’t think you’ll get in if you need as much aid as you are showing.
Denison, as an example, accepted 7.6% of internationals last year and only 15% of them enrolled. They are likely seeking out high payers. Amherst accepted 1.5%.
International rates are much lower than US acceptance rates. Even Whitman only accepted 7.7% and they have budget issues and discount heavily. You can be assured they will be seeking those who can afford to pay more.
You are a fine student. I wish you well but I don’t see luck at any of these. But if you do get in, I’d guess it won’t be at your budget.
Excellent math & science scores! The ACT science isn’t factored into the composite score. If your ACT English & Reading scores are both 30, then I wouldn’t bother with a retake. However, if they are different, (e.g. one is a 28 & the other a 32), then you may want to consider a retake. Also, if you can score >= 700 on SAT Reading/Writing, then I would advise that you take this instead of the ACT retake.
This ACT chart is from the 2025-2026 MIT Common Data Set: 31% of enrolled students in this class submitted ACT scores. Scores below 30 could get you screened out of schools like Caltech & MIT.
Your record is excellent… except for the low reading/English scores. Is there any way that you can do some prep work and retake to bring those up? I agree, no ED applications. Do you qualify for a Common App fee waiver? I’d say to prep for a retake of the ACT (maybe you can get some help for free at school?) and then reconsider after you get the scores back.
All you can do is apply. Yes, LACs offer excellent aid but as I showed above, their acceptance rates for international are tiny. Even the ones that claim to meet need and are need blind - have low rates. You can try of course, but this will be your issue.
You mentioned Bama. It is cheap for international relative to others but not cheap to meet your $20K. @Andygp if he’s still out there and his son has been at Wooster a few years but can point you to some of the cheapest out there.
I know on another thread, someone said their intl friend got a full ride at Southern Miss so not sure the normal international merit and Texas A&I International plus Minot State might be others to look at. But $20K, I’m not sure.
You might find this thread a bit disheartening and frustrating but it likely has good info for you to source additional names.
Others have suggested something similar but I’d like to repeat, maybe a little more bluntly: since you can only afford to pay $15-20k/yr, you must search for schools that give generous financial aid to international students BUT are less prestigious/selective than the top schools like MIT, Grinnell, etc. A quick search says these could be them:
Case Western
University of Miami
Tulane
University of Alabama
University of Arizona
but you should do some research and verify… and there are likely others. IOW your current list is insufficient and focuses too narrowly on top schools.
15-20K means at least a full tuition waiver + some campus job. Find out places which give tuition waivers and full rides or are need blind for internationals. However, you should note that chances are low for an international student to get any of these since there are enough great American students as well and they will rightfully get a priority. BTW if there is a serious financial issue why try USA and take up a loan/favors worth 100K for 4 years? Chances that you will get a job post education and do the H1B, Greencard path are very low especially for Indians and anyway paying 100K back by doing a job is not easy. Go to USA if you get a full ride but otherwise doing bachelors in India and looking outside India for graduate studies makes more sense. Indian male in CS is as bad as it can get from diversity perspective. That will bite both for admission and job afterwards if that is the plan.
I shouldn’t have assumed you are a male student, I think it is my natural bias based on other details that came out of the post. You will get some benefit of diversity of you are an Indian female wanting to do CS… but for full waivers and full-rides are always extremely competitive and the world is a very big place with thousands of great people applying for those rare opportunities.
I am Male. And, I mean yeah I’d be able to attend the US with a significant aid package anyways. I strongly believe I could make the way in though. My aim isn’t to settle so that isn’t a major issue.
The issue is getting the cost to where you need it vs your hope to stay or not.
I put a thread above and I remember @Andygp son looked so many places and pays well above what you seek.
But there are schools that meet need and there are schools that meet need and are need blind but these schools have low acceptance rates for international.
Arizona and Alabama, listed above, will be well above your budget although Bama will he much closer - but not close. Then there is transportation home, summer housing etc.
