Schools

Looking to go into Business/Finance but would not mind economics. Looking for some other schools to apply too

  • Extremely Likely: UofSC
  • Likely: Penn state Syracuse Fairfield
  • Toss-up: Providence SUNY bing
  • Lower Probability: Villanova(ED) BU(ED2?) Wisco
  • Low Probability: BC(ED2?) W&L

Is UofSC South Carolina? I figure that it must be because U of Southern California would not be “extremely likely” with a 3.5 unweighted GPA.

Is U. South Carolina really better than the various SUNY’s? In-state public schools are usually more affordable than out of state, although there are exceptions and maybe this might be one.

I would only apply ED if both the school is your clear top choice, and the NPC shows it as likely to be affordable or you are fine being full pay.

And keep in mind that these days “full pay” is getting close to $100,000/year at some schools. Given how strong your in-state public options are in New York for some of us being full pay at a private university might not be worth it. This will however vary from one family to the next, and can be a tough decision.

U of SC - target at best with the GPA if applying to business. Likely if not business.

Penn State - safe for school but not business. Syracuse - you’re full pay so target best case. Same with Fairfield.

Toss up - I’d say likely Providence. Bing I’ll agree.

No to your lower and low probability.

I think you need to “expand” your list.

The safe move with a big name is Bama which has a well known B School - Culverhouse. But if you want to be in a city like U of SC, then College of Charleston is safe.

Other B schools that have nice names that are likely - Miami Ohio (Farmer), U Delaware, and URI.

If you like SU, U Denver is a home run school that would be safe. Or if you want to stay East, Bryant would work.

You may get into a school on your list - but you may not and I’m suggesting you add buffer. Perhaps I’m too conservative but I think you over played your odds a bit.

Good luck.

yea Uofsc is south carolina thanks for the advice. I am fine with being full pay(would not have to take loans). SUNY bing is really the only suny I’ve seen that is good what others do you recommend?

I would add the Univeristy of Buffalo (UB).

These are misconceptions. You can get a great education most anywhere. Mine turned down Honors at U of SC for unreputed Charleston but she was in two small groups within Honors and her education was mostly strong.

In life, no one will care if you went to Bing or Albany or UNH or Central Connecticut.

The point is - find the right school for you - not what a magazine says is good.

Have you even visited different school types - large, mid size, small ? Urban, suburban, rural?

If you are full pay, you have the resources to visit. You will make your success in life - not Bing vs Oneonta.

So find the right school for you. One that fits you - not what people tell you is a bigger name….bcuz they’re all mainly substitutional .

You will be somewhere four years day after day. So look deeper.

I would beg to differ. Our Southern California child who got into all the UC’s, USC, Yale, chose University of Buffalo. Her original intent was to become a physician; she ended up liking the engineering component and switched major. She double majored in electrical engineering and computer software. She came back to Southern California and now is a manager of an engineering department for an international firm.

My husband is a Stanford engineering grad and he was impressed with Buffalo’s program. The school is vastly underrated but it’s becoming a powerhouse by reputation of its graduates. You know that’s what built the UC’s, the graduates/staff.

Given what you said and your current list, I would also suggest checking out Pitt, Delaware, Miami(OH), and Minnesota. Maybe also Duquesne?

I agree about checking out Denver and Bryant as well.

I would switch Fairfield and Providence on your lists. Fairfield is a hot school and it has become increasingly more difficult to get accepted there. You GPA is 25th percentile and that is very important to them. Fewer than 20% of last year’s freshman class even submitted test scores there, so your ACT won’t help much and they don’t consider it an important factor for admission anyway. You do check all the boxes for Providence, on the other hand, and are a likely admit there. Fairfield is a toss up.

I would also move Binghamton from toss up to lower probability. It has become a very tough admit for in state students. My instate GS was in the top 10% of his class and had a strong SAT but was rejected. And yet he was accepted at UMASS into their Honors program with a very good financial package. You might want to consider UMass. Their Isenberg Business School is excellent. As far as SUNY is concerned, I think you’d be likely at Buffalo and a toss up at either Stony Brook or Albany.
