Congratulations on your acheivements. You do have strong ECs, but those won’t ‘offset’ your GPA.

How many B’s (or lower) in core courses? Are the grades lower than A in STEM courses?

MIT and Tufts don’t have merit aid, so won’t be affordable. CMU and Notre Dame offer merit to a select few top students. These are highly unlikely at your GPA range, as is admission. Here is ND’s net price calculator to get a cost estimate:

I don’t think Purdue is a toss up, more lower probability although it’s hard to asses your GPA without a rank. What decile do you think you fall into within your school cohort? And what was your SAT breakdown? Do you have any AP test scores?

I’m surprised to see ND, Bucknell and Tufts on your list. They are very very different from all the other schools you listed.

How are deciding on your ED1/ED2 schools? ND doesn’t give much of a bump for REA but they are still need blind for internationals so I’d apply for aid there because they won’t come close to your budget otherwise. (Same with MIT).

Do your due diligence as there is a strong religious component at ND and their four year plan of study is very different than the other schools on your list.

I have three B’s in AP English Language, four B’s in Calc BC, and a few B’s in science subjects. MIT and Tufts are just long shots — what I really want is to get into a school at the Purdue or VT level.

Unfortunately Bs in math and science are going to be a problem at Purdue and all the schools you’ve listed in the lower and low probability categories.

On GPA/rank: My school doesn’t report class rank at all — there’s no decile or rank on the transcript, which I know makes a 3.59 hard to read. Honestly I’d put myself around the middle of my cohort. For context, the school is fairly selective (roughly the top 1% of applicants nationally, all-honors/AP curriculum), so “middle” here is a competitive group, but I won’t pretend the GPA is strong. Most of my B’s are in Calc BC and a few science courses, plus three in AP English Lang — so unfortunately they’re concentrated in my intended-major areas.

SAT: 1500 (Math 800 / R/W 700). Math is clearly my strong side; R/W was the bottleneck.

AP scores: None yet — my exams are this coming May, so I won’t have official scores before applying. I’m expecting mostly 4s and 5s in the STEM subjects, but I know that’s unverified for now.

On Purdue — you’re probably right. Toss-up was optimistic; given the GPA, lower probability is fair. My hope is that the 800 Math, all-STEM rigor, and hands-on projects (PID control on a CanSat, FEA research, 7 years of combat robotics) offset the transcript at a project-heavy engineering school, but I understand that’s an argument, not a guarantee.

On ND / Bucknell / Tufts — fair call, they’re the odd ones out. Honest reasons: ND because I’m Catholic and the fit appeals to me, Bucknell as a smaller school that might actually give some FA/merit, and Tufts mostly for location. I know they’re reaches/gambles and a different flavor from the rest of my list.

On ED/aid — this is where I’d love your input. I hadn’t thought carefully about ED1/ED2 yet, and your point about ND/MIT being need-blind for internationals is something I didn’t know — thank you. I’d assumed I was full-pay everywhere, but if applying for aid at need-blind schools doesn’t hurt my chances, that changes things given my ~$50k budget. Given all this, would you push me toward an ED somewhere in the Purdue/VT/WPI tier to maximize my odds at a realistic target, rather than spending an ED on a reach?

What year are you in school? US applicants take their AP tests in May right after they take their classes.

Your math SAT will help you.

Purdue and VT don’t offer ED, only EA, and you need to be sure to meet that deadline for any school that offers EA.

It’s my opinion that students should only use ED if they have a clear favorite school. The ED rates always look more inflated than they really are because hooked applicants are admitted in those ED rounds (recruited athletes, legacies, kids of donors, etc… ) And if you are needing to compare merit offers, using ED isn’t a good strategy.

What do you plan to do with your degree once you’re finished with your studies? Does your country have a big need for aerospace and mechanical engineering?

Once you graduate, your visa expires and you are expected to return to your home country.

A number of the big engineering/ aerospace firms state, on their websites, that they will not employ, nor sponsor non-citizens.

So I’m wondering what you plan on doing with your degree. Right now, a number of US firms are not hiring at all. Funding from government contracts has basically dried up, such that there’s a lot of competition for a few private sector contracts.

You’re right on all counts, thank you! that clears up my ED confusion. Since Purdue and VT are EA-only, and I don’t have a clear single favorite (and I’d want to compare merit offers, especially at my budget), it sounds like ED doesn’t make sense for me. I’ll focus on hitting the EA deadlines instead and keep the reaches as unrestricted EA/RD gambles.To answer your earlier question; I’m a current senior (12th grade), applying this coming cycle.If you don’t mind one more: given all this (3.59 with the B’s in-major, 1500/800M, strong engineering ECs, no AP scores to submit, ~$50k budget, merit matters), does my Likely/Match tier look right to you: Iowa State, Michigan Tech, Arizona State, Alabama? I’d especially value any aerospace/mechanical-friendly schools I might be missing in that Purdue-adjacent range where I’d actually be a strong admit and could get merit.

This is a really important point, and thank you for raising it. it’s something I’ve had to think about seriously as an international student.You’re right that the ITAR wall is real. A large majority of US defense-aerospace technical roles are citizen-only, NASA civil-service is closed to me, and the primes won’t sponsor for controlled work. I’m not assuming I’ll walk into a job designing rockets at a US defense contractor — that path is mostly closed to non-citizens, and I know it.My actual plan is more realistic on a few fronts:

I’m not fixed on US defense aerospace. The non-ITAR side commercial aviation (GE, Boeing commercial, Honeywell), civil space, propulsion R&D, and especially the software/data/systems side of aerospace does hire international engineers on OPT/STEM-OPT and sponsors H-1B. My background is as much mechanical + CS/software (self-hosting, control code, data) as it is “aerospace,” which widens where I can work.

Mechanical engineering travels. Unlike a pure aero-defense degree, ME is broad: robotics, manufacturing, automotive, hardware and those industries are far less ITAR-locked and more open to non-citizens.

My home country does have a real aerospace/defense and manufacturing sector plus a very strong robotics and manufacturing industry. Returning isn’t a fallback for me; it’s a legitimate strong option. A US degree is highly valued there.

So my honest answer: I want the US education and the OPT experience, I’ll target the non-ITAR/commercial/software side while I’m there, and I’m genuinely fine returning to Korea’s aerospace/robotics industry long-term. I’d rather go in with clear eyes about this than pretend the visa/ITAR issue doesn’t exist.

Take a look at RPI. It’s an engineering focused school with a very strong aero program.

ASU admission requirements are listed at First-year admission requirements | Admission | ASU . Specific majors may have higher requirements; for example, mechanical engineering lists some at Mechanical Engineering - BSE | Degree Details | ASU Degree Search . Based on your stats, you may be able to consider Arizona State an admission safety.

However, Arizona State has a list price for out of state and international students higher than your price limit. You may want to check the scholarship estimator at | Financial Aid & Scholarship Services and check whether international students are eligible for those scholarships. But because the estimated scholarships are not guaranteed, Arizona State cannot really be a safety on the cost side of things.

Does your school profile give any context to GPA or grading) Given it is an international school I don’t feel I can judge at all, if a 3.6 is high or low, etc. Honestly, even within US, comparing and contextualizing GPA is harder to do than many people here realize/admit. My kids’ HS has kids going to Purdue and CMU and Tufts with 3.7 (or lower)…. admittedly with higher SATs and also amazing ECs. But if it is scored like a regular US high school, it is low for most of those schools.

You are better off with a school like Tufts than Purdue/ state schools that are going to be more metric-heavy and less holistic IMO.

Maybe look at U Rochester or Case Western (both have aero) and are a bit easier admits but still GREAT programs - feel a bit Tufts like to me. Or on the tech-specific side - RPI, WPI…

How about adding Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to your list? They offer merit scholarships to international students & I think the test scores outweigh the GPA. “The award amount can be significant if the applicant performs well on either of these examinations.” according to their website. An SAT score of 1500 would be very competitive.

My opinion…if you need financial aid to attend any college…apply for financial aid. Yes, some of your schools are need aware for international students OR don’t guarantee to meet full need for all international students. BUT if you would benefit from getting aid…apply for it. An acceptance without sufficient aid to attend might just as well be a rejection.

As an international student, please be aware that the Net Price Calculators might not be accurate.

You have a couple of sure things on your list, which is good. And they sound affordable. That being the case, it’s fine to apply to some not so sure things.

I’m not sure why you are considering ED.

Since you are considering Univ of Alabama, I would add Univ of Alabama-Huntsville. It will meet your budget plus is located in a major aerospace hub. Even with your plan to major in mech, there will be ample opportunities for aero-focused courses and projects.

Your holistic point really resonates; betting on schools where my ECs can offset the GPA makes more sense than leaning on metric-heavy ones. My one hesitation with Tufts, Rochester, and Case is that they’re need-aware for internationals. At ~$85k COA and a ~$50k budget, I’d be applying for need-based aid at those schools, and I’m worried that asking for it works against me in the admissions read; the opposite of the full-pay advantage I’d have at the state schools. Am I overthinking that, or is it a real tension I should weigh when deciding where to spend applications?
