Schools

  • Safety (certain admission and affordability)
    UNC-Asheville (admitted with top merit)
    ECU - admitted
App State (admitted with top merit)
    UNC Charlotte (admitted)

  • Likely
U of SC (admitted, in state tuition + perhaps more)
    UNCW (applied EA)
    Elon (admitted)

  • Match
    NC State (EA)
    VA Tech (EA)
    UNC (EA - hard target?)

  • Reach
    UVA (EA)

Did she apply EA to UNC? It can be tough for a student from a highly competitive county to get in RD. Are you from one of the larger NC cities?

How is Tech a reach and a match?

Fixed - should have said UVA.

EA, last year, 47 kids from her high school were accepted, and she is ranked quite a bit above that and submitted test scores.

So U of SC is a safety.

Elon may be a safety - depending on if you can get to $40K.

UNCW is a safety.

NC State is a likely ans is Va Tech. Va Tech won’t be affordable though. UNC - likely right.

UVA won’t be affordable unless you have need.

It seems like you want to stay close - so I think your list is very good.

But I’m guessing Elon and UVA were wasted apps.

If the student likes smaller like Elon but UNCA is too small, look at CNU in Virginia.

Good luck.

Interestingly this year we’ve seen kids with her stats deferred at Elon so them being a safety for top stats kids isn’t a given. She has been accepted though so now she’s waiting on the honors/fellows process. I agree UVA was a waste but she snuck that one in. I don’t think she’ll be accepted anyway, but you never know!

Waste from an admission POV. Not to say they shouldn’t try and go for Jefferson…but unless you have need and they do meet need, it’s a waste because $40K isn’t possible…but an admission to UVA is unlikely, but certainly possible.

Elon is a safety - because you’ve already been admitted - but it may be - because you have a budget and then if you can’t get to the budget, it’s a waste…if that makes sense. Elon is a need aware school so wealth can be factored into an application.

Any affordable admit is a safety…Any unaffordable school, no matter the admission possibility, is a reach. So Va Tech is a reach.

With stats like your students, you can go as low as $20K - but you’d venture a few more hours from home - an Alabama or Ms State type. The U of SC will be a reasonable OOS cost though.

Best of luck.

Yup-not interested in any of those schools; too far and given the strength of our in state schools and low cost, not worth it. Also not big on going to states that are even more politically conservative than NC.

She can do NC State and UNC for just over $20k, and the other UNC schools will all likely be at or below $20k with very low travel costs.

Then you have a great list.

Update - accepted to UNCW, no merit yet, but pretty sure it comes later.

NC State and UNC should come out in the next week or two. Nervous!!

If the FA/scholarships are not known yet, then the chance category is based on the likelihood of getting enough FA/scholarships.
