Chance me NCSU Engineering in state (Wake County) just academics

As title suggests I am rising senior in wake co and my main goal is NC state engineering preferably ME or AE

I want to know if my academics are competitive enough for NCSU since I know that they prioritize that a lot.

For my academics my UW gpa is a 3.7 and weighed a 4.22

I am actually dual enrolled at NCSU as a high school student have taken both MA 111 and MA141(Calc 1) and have done pretty well, I’ll be taking calc 2 in senior year. Aside from that I have taken 5 APs (APWH, AP CSP, AP BIO, AP LANG, APUSH) and 10 honors classes. I know my UW gpa is a bit lower but its worth noting that my school is very competitive( you had to apply to even attend in the first place) and very small only 66 kids in my grade in total. Are these academics competitive?

Your grades in MA141 and MA241 will be important in secondary admission to specific engineering majors if you are admitted to NCSU and enroll there: Join a Department - Change of Degree Application (CODA) | College of Engineering . Both ME and AE are somewhat competitive, in that not all who apply to them get admitted in secondary admission (but most do).

Your HS counselor will be the best person to categorize NCSU for you, as well as the rest of your list. Have you spoken with them? What do they say?

They basically said that based off my academics and ECs NCSU is a good match school for me

Will you be taking dual enrollment or AP Physics ? This would be very important for your intended major.
Your grades in the math courses taken at NCSU would also factor heavily - if you get a B or higher in these NCSU admission officers are likely to consider your curriculum rigor and results align with what they want, making it a good match for you.
(You could even apply to the Honors college for perks/benefits.)

I would go by that assessment then. I would understand exactly what they mean by ‘match’ though…some counselors use match the same as target, and IME target schools are not sure things. Meaning you would expect to be accepted to some, not all, targets.

What is your highly likely/safety school (and affordable)?

I also agree with Myos regarding physics. What physics have you had so far?

I will be likely be taking physics and calc 3 second semester senior year

For Hs physics I’ve only taken physics honors but that’s all my school offers

That’s good :+1:
Do you have 2 affordable safeties?

For NC publics, the other two options with ME majors are NC A&T and UNC Charlotte.

Agree that if you are at a small s hook, the counselor will be your best guide, especially for your instate options.

A school to keep in your back pocket is UNC-Asheville. They have a program with NC State where you can go to UNC-A for a year and then transfer into engineering at State. One of my kid’s friends did this with Biomedical Engineering, but I know the program also works for ME. It is on the UNCA and NCSU websites.

I think you have a good chance at NC State, but I’m definitely not an expert on admissions into their engineering programs.

Is that more advantageous than going to NC A&T or UNC-C, or starting at community college to transfer to NCSU?

Yes DEFINITELY, if you want to graduate from NC State in engineering.

I couldn’t speak to the strength of the NC A&T or UNCC programs vs NC State.

I don’t think there is a guaranteed transfer from community college into the engineering school at State. There is the C3 program at community college for students from households making less than $100K that allows you to transfer to State after completing your Associates, but I don’t think it guarantees placement in engineering.

Here is a list of schools that have the guaranteed engineering program with NC State: Undergraduate Engineering Partnerships with Other Institutions | College of Engineering

The UNC-A to NCSU engineering transfer looks like competitive (not guaranteed) admission for the transfer, according to Joint 2+2 Engineering Program | College of Engineering .

(emphasis added)

I shouldn’t have used the word “guaranteed”. It is a seamless program assuming you have the grades. No other transfer will be seamless – only the joint programs NC State has with the institutions listed on this page (which does not include UNCC, NCA&T, or most community colleges, which was your question).

Obviously you have to have the grades in the program.

But the answer to your question is YES, the UNCA/NCSU program is better than transferring from the schools you mentioned.

I did not realize that NC State also has a similar engineering program with UNCW, but that would be a good option too. Beach vs Mountains for the first year or two.
