NYU and TCNJ are the only schools I’m applying to that I’m really worried about not making.
I’m a rising senior and a white male from NJ. I haven’t visited either school but my visit for NYU is in a week
.
GPA end of junior year (weighted, my school doesn’t tell us our UW): 94+
SAT: 1320 (670 RW, 650 M). [I know, I need to bring it up to at least a 1400 and I plan on retaking on it]
Freshman and sophomore year: took all the honors classes I could, only one AP course is offered as a freshman (World History) but I didn’t take it. got straight As.
Junior year schedule/grades:
AP Lit: 99
Chinese 3: 94
Trig/Analyt: 87
Honors Physics: 88
Honors US 2: 94
Creative Drama/Theatre: 99
and gym 99 lol.
I only wish I would’ve done better in physics because it had the most weight on my gpa.
Senior year schedule:
AP Psych
AP Stats
AP Gov (U.S.)
Independent Study for English (Shakespeare, with AP Lit teacher)
Theatre Production Workshop (with same creative drama teacher, basically I learn how to direct/construct a play and I will even get to produce one by the end of the year)
Intro to organic chemistry
gym
Extracurricular activities:
Freshman year: Varsity soccer @ old school I was at for a MP, everything else is at my school now: photography club, med club, freshman volleyball
Sophomore year: JV soccer captain, photography club, med club, Rutgers Pre-med Honors Program, JV volleyball
WORKED SUMMER BETWEEN SOPH AND JUNIOR YEAR. also I kinda went through an exisistential crisis this summer when my parents got separated and I realized I was unhappy with my life and I felt like I wasn’t being true to my passion (ie: I was considering being a doctor when I’ve always loved english)
Junior year: drama club, acted in fall play and spring musical, improv club, varsity tennis
This summer I made a Shakespeare play at a community theatre that I’m performing in this fall, and I also got a job at American Eagle that I plan on continuing until I leave for college
Senior year: drama club, hopefully (I should) make the fall play/spring musical, improv club, varsity tennis
Letters of Rec: from my AP LIT/independent study teacher who I am super close with, creative drama/theatre production teacher who knows I really enjoy that stuff and am an excellent student, and my US2 teacher who just respected me a lot
Essays: haven’t written, but I know my NYU one will be about how I was unsure if I wanted a city school at first until I realized it’s the perfect environment for a kid who wants to pursue writing and also enjoy all life has to offer lol (unless thats a cliche?). I’m also gay with separated parents but I really want to avoid using those in my essays because I don’t want to play the victim card!
Finally, I know my SAT score is probably my biggest downfall. I would estimate I’m in the top 40 or even 30 in my class, which is pretty competitive and more than 500 kids. I also hope that my junior and especially senior year schedules show that I’m interested in english and theatre and that they compliment my extra curriculars.
