Chance me, or how can I improve?

GPA: unweighted 3.76
weighted: 4.0
rank: last time I checked was #17, but I probably went up or could go up more.

Lots of honors and 1 AP class (no test). Took a Statistics class at a university this summer. I have maybe 2 dual enrollments.

EC: JROTC 2 years,
Key Club 2 years,
Student Council 1 year,
Band for a few weeks
-planning to join one other group
About 10 volunteer hours ):

ACT with writing:25 (Taking again, hoping to get at least a 27)

I am also taking SAT subject tests in November. World History and either U.S. History, Literature or Biology E.

I’m probably not as competitive as others, but do you see a chance for improvement?

no replies? ):

To be completely frank, your chance for improvement greatly exceeds your chance for acceptance. Best of luck to you.

So, i don’t have much of a chance then?

Your test scores and ECs do not make you competitive. I hope you have some realistic match and safety schools on your list. Your test scores are your biggest issue for not only the most selective colleges but for many others as well. I would be curious to see your college list and to know your state of residence.

Yes I do have safety, I was just thinking I would apply.
My list is University of Virgina , UNC Chapel Hill, LSU, Tulane, and Loyola New Orleans. I’m from New Orleans, Louisiana.

You’ve picked some mighty competitive schools that set the bar pretty high- and get thousands of super-qualified applicants. Your gpa isn’t bad. But, with weak ECs and a 25 ACT, it suggests your hs is not particularly rigorous. 10 hours of vol? A few weeks of band and you’re not sure if you have two DE?

Brown, UVA are stratospheric reaches. Have you looked at the profiles for those schools and UNC? I wish you the best but I do wonder if you are kidding here. Sorry.

You have to realize that Brown and the other Ivies double weight SAT/ACT test scores when calculating each applicants Academic Index (AI)
[The Academic Index - Ivy League Admissions Key? - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/academic_index.htm)

Frankly, your AI is too low for admission to Brown, even if you were a recruited
athlete.

A 25 ACT is the 79% band, pretty good at lots of universities who would be
glad to have you.

Good luck.

^ I work for an Ivy and have never seen an AI, but I don’t get involved with recruitable athletes. And, we don’t “double weight” anything in the main pool of applicants. In fact, once a kid’s stats are “within range,” a whole host of considerations takes place.

Your EC’s are too few and you don’t have leadership.
You don’t list any hooks.
You have a low ACT score.
Your GPA isn’t that great weighted or unweighted.
Your rank isn’t that bad as long as you have at least 400 students in your class…
Your course rigor isn’t that bad…presumably you don’t have a very good selection of courses at your school.

Brown: Very, very high reach.
University of Virginia: Very high reach
UNC: Very high reach
LSU: You’re probably fine
Tulane: High reach
Loyola: Probably fine

Depending on where you’re located, I’d apply to some of the state schools. I’d only consider a 29+ a competitive candidate has everything else going for them. Without any EC’s, hooks, good essays, or any of that stuff… You’d almost need a perfect score to outweigh what you have. I’m assuming you’re very intelligent, but some schools just aren’t for certain people. You can consider applying as a transfer later on.

:) Best of luck!

No, I am not kidding?

No I don’t go to a very rigorous high school, i’m in a normal public high school, without many resources.

Don’t know what it is that is attracting you to the schools you have named, but I would suggest a broader list, and more in reasonable reach. (and sometimes may give you better aide for your level) Some schools to maybe look into for you: New College in FL, Gillford in NC, St Marys in MD, if looking for nice liberal arts type. It does look like you need the resources of someone to help you find a broader/better fit of schools for you/one on one with asking what you want in a school. Happy searching!
