Chance Me? OU,RIT,UMASS, ETC?

Hi! I’m currently going into my senior year of high school, and I was wondering if I could get chanced for these colleges. I’m basically applying to two sets of colleges, one set as a Computer Science major, and the other has a Meteorology major.

Computer Science schools: Northeastern, RIT, UMASS (Instate)
Meteorology schools: University of Oklahoma (Top Choice, OOS), Florida State University (OOS), Valparaiso University

Here are my stats;
GPA: 3.94 Weighted/3.5 unweighted (Major difference?!?! I don’t know if I calculated right since school only reports weighted)
Class Rank: 69/345- Top 20%
SAT: 1340 first test; 660 Reading, 680 Math (Waiting for June’s scores but probably not retaking again)
ACT: Highest single score: 29, Superscore 30 (Probably not reporting)
Course load: Rigorous, All Honors, and a couple AP’s (No one really takes all AP’s here besides like top 10)
APs: European History (Soph year, only AP available to sophomores, 3 on the exam) APUSH (Junior year, 5 on the exam)
Next Year Schedule: Honors physics, AP Calc AB, AP French, Honors English, Regular History + graduation requirements (gym, etc)
Extracurricular Activities: Cross Country (All four years, Varsity Senior year)
Indoor Track (All four years, Varsity Senior)
Outdoor Track (All four years, Varsity Senior)
Random Acts of Kindness Club (Sophomore year, basically just did random acts of kindness around the school)
Environmental Club (Junior and Senior year, not sure about leadership yet)
Also I work at an assisted living facility (In the dining hall, basically a waitress, working there Junior and Senior year)

Recommendation?: All should be excellent, Guidance counselor loves me, also getting a math rec (I skipped a math class/got moved up a level, so sorta did a weird math track for my school since I started in lower level but moved up, and getting an environmental science/Meteorology teacher’s recommendation

Costs? My family most likely doesn’t qualify for any need (My brother barely got any), am not considering schools with high OOS tuition and no OOS scholarships (Like Penn State). Would prefer to get a scholarship to lessen the cost. Thank you!

I’m not familiar with most of the schools on your list, but for Northeastern I would say thats a reach because the ACT score is 31-34 and even though they only look at weighted GPA you have to be in that standardized test score Range!!

Bumpp

Just a head’s up OU just raised their Tuition, Fees and Room and Board by about 7%. Great school for meteorology though and I’m sure you’d get in.

Anyway you can take CAL BC next year instead of AB? Generally BC classes cover both AB and BC while AB classes are a slower pace. My D16 is a Meteorology major and will be starting at OU in the Fall, when we met with the department head while she was in high school he strongly advised taking the highest level math courses you can while in high school.

At my school only people who are going into engineering (not even computer science, just engineering) are allowed to take BC. Also I talked fo my math teacher about this (since BC starts JR year) and she said that you’ll actually learn/retain more information in AB because of the teacher, and she highly reccomends AB over BC.
I actually met with the department head this summer at the national weather service! Are you guy’s from Oklahoma? I’m a little afraid moving from Massachusetts all the way to the south.
Will taking AB over BC really hurt me that much? I really can’t do anything about it right now haha. Thanks!

@peanutbutter2010 We are currently living in Texas but all of my kids were born in MA. We moved to Texas when my oldest was 10 years old, 8 years ago. I don’t think you’ll have any problem adjusting to OK. OU even has the same crazy “fees” set up as UMASS:-) Funny about your concerns about going south, my dd’s concern is heading NORTH to OU! We visited in February during an ice storm we had to go to the mall there and buy boots, gloves and coats because Birkenstocks just weren’t going to cut it!

I don’t think not having taken BC will hurt you, you’d just have a bit more of an edge if you could take it. The number one reason for dropping out of the meteorology program is not be able to handle the upper level math. There is a lot of higher math in OU’s Meteorology program! You only have to tack on one more upper level math class to get a math minor!

Heyyy!! I was actually born in Dallas Texas, my parents moved up to Mass when I was two! Glad to hear they get ice storms, I was worried about not having a winter!

Math is one of the reasons why I like meterology, I’ve had a passion for it since third grade (tornadoes seemed to scare me yet intrigued me so I started researching them). I always loved math and knew I wanted to do something math-heavy but not a math major (one of the reasons why I choose computer science at first). Then this summer we toured OU since we were in the area (almost actually skipped the visit, sooo glad I didn’t) and I fell in love. I love the fact that I can get a concentration in computer science while pursuing my major in Meterology. And not to mention the National Weather Service!! Honestly if I never did that tour, I would’ve never considered OU, sooo glad I decided to ‘check it out.’ And it convinced me to follow my dreams + passion of meterology instead of just going into computer science.

@Peanutbutter2021 Funny that you were born in Texas! The National Weather Service is awesome. I think you’d be very happy at OU, the people are very nice. Sounds like you’d be fine with the math.

Have you read up on OU’s Meteorology department’s semester abroad programs? They have exchange programs with the University of Reading in England, Hamburg University in Germany, and Monash University in Australia. My DD is very excited about studying in Germany, thankfully German is her language of choice!

When you are looking at the cost of OU make sure you look at COA and not just tuition because those “fees” are killer!
Here’s the current COA (includes to recent increases):

Tuition $18,897.00
Fees $6,080.00
Books & Supplies $714.00
Housing & Food $10,280.00
Personal & Miscellaneous $3,307.00
Transportation $2,126.00
Loan Fees $70.00
Total: $41,474.00

Here’s a link to non-resident scholarship:

The school of Meteorology offers a partial non resident tuition wavier:

The only way we could swing OU OOS is because DD is National Merit!

Yeah I looked at the study abroad, hoping to do the England one!
And yeah the cost scares me a bit, planning on just applying and seeing what happens. But it’s basically the only school where I feel comfortable going into meterology mainly because of national weather service.
