I plan to receieve a major in History. Assuming I have an amazing admission essay, what are my chances?

What state are you from? Are both CR and M SAT scores above 600 (i.e. fairly equal)? If you are not from NJ and your scores are similar, you have a chance, but you’d likely not get any $$ which makes the tuition quite pricey. If you are from NJ (lots of competition with people with high GPA and SAT) and one of your scores is much higher than the other, it’s a more dicey chance. Go for it…what do you have to lose? Good luck.

Your grades are good, and so are your ECs.

Your SATs, in my view, my be a bit low.

you might want to take them again

my son raised his CR by 70 points and his math by 40 points with ZERO studying.

In your case, an extra 110 points just might make the difference.

Presumably, they superscore.

I am from Missouri. Also, I plan to take the SAT again in November so hopefullly it will raise my score!

Quick Question: If my school is extremely prestigious, does Maryland take that into consideration?

Being from Missouri will be a plus…not very many applicants from there. UMD will look at the school profile…like, # of students who go on to Universities, courses, offered, etc. Maybe your guidance counselor can put in add’l wording about the prestige/difficulty of the high school. Again, be sure that you would still want UMD if you were paying full price OOS tuition. You may get some merit aid, but it wouldn’t be one of the big ones, and UMD is notoriously stingy w/ need-based aid. It’s the reality…it’s a great school, but be sure it will still be on your list if you have to pay full-freight.
