I’m a senior in suburban NC (outside of Charlotte) at a large, average public high school. Not a lot of students apply to super competitive colleges and those at the top of their class usually go to UNC. I’m a biracial filipino/white girl and a Poli Sci major hopeful, or something along those lines (Politics, International Relations, Public Policy, etc). I’m also first generation and child of an immigrant.

I’m applying to Columbia University (early decision), UNC (early action), Northeastern (early action), Georgetown SFS, NYU, George Washington Elliott School of International Affairs, Wake Forest, and NC State (only if I’m rejected from my early action schools).

GPA: 5.125 W, 4.0 UW
Rank: 1/387
SAT: 1390, 1400 (I’m not submitting these anywhere except Georgetown because they require all scores)
SAT Subject Tests: Chemistry - 570 (lol), Math II - 660 (lol again), Literature - 730; (again, only sending these to Georgetown)
ACT: 33 (34 English, 35 Reading, 29 Math, 32 Science)
PSAT Selection Index: 219 (putting this here because I might be a semifinalist if all goes well, finding out this September!)

Classes:

  • 4 semesters of French (taking French IV 1st sem senior year)
  • 11 APs total by the end of senior year (Lang, Environmental Sci, Lit, Calc AB, US Gov, APUSH, Psych, Calc BC, Bio, Human Geo, Euro)
  • All honors/AP classes with the exception of my first two sem of French (no honors offered), student council (labeled “Leadership I” and “Leadership II” junior year - III and IV my senior year will be honors), and freshman PE

My recommendations will be extremely average - I haven’t had the opportunity to really get to know any of my teachers at school very well because we have big classes and hardly any of my teachers actually seem to want to be here. My guidance counselor also left my school for this upcoming year, which I just found out about lol.

I put things on here that I’m not featuring on my Common App because I’m not really sure if I should take out some of my more irrelevant extracurriculars and replace them with the other stuff that exceeded the limits.

Your chances look good- difficult classes, relatively good test scores, good extracurriculars, high class rank. For Georgetown, you might want to retake the subject tests, they’ll want scores in the 700s for each. Of course, places like Columbia will be a reach for anyone. Good luck!

Not to be nosy, but im just wondering about your ap scores? your sat is alright(for columbia, not too sure if thats benchmark). Columbia,being an ivy probably suggests you send two sats(in ivy league language,suggest=mandatory). Your ec’s look great(it looks like you are a leader in most/if not all of them). Good luck on NMS. 219 is a great score.

@waterbrether725 5s on lit, lang, and gov, 4s on psych, APES, APUSH, 3 on calc AB. would I really still have to submit two SATs to columbia if I’m submitting an ACT?

@emrose623 Sadly, yes you must. Its recommended(remember Ivy Leagues are all reaches no matter how qualified you are).Submitting SAT2’s will help your chance. The ACT replaces the SAT, but not the subject tests because the subject tests are based on specific areas(chem,bio,us,languages). The whole sat subject test is based on that one area.

Its pretty much a lie in my opinion. SAT subject tests will help in the admission. It willl show the AOs how qualified you are in different areas.

@waterbrether725 OH my bad i thought you meant 2 sittings of the SAT! I think I’m taking a french subject test for Georgetown, but I wasn’t planning on doing it until December (past the ED date) because this semester will be the first french class I’ve had since sophomore year. Is the 730 Literature score okay to submit?

Georgetown and Columbia will be the hardest to swing, especially considering for international relations they’re potentially the two most relevant schools out there- Georgetown more so but at that level it’s pretty much irrelevant. One is in the political capital of the most powerful nation in the history of the world and the other is in the corporate capital of that same nation. With that being said, you have a very impressive record, and a solid shot at every school on there. Only downside is recs, and I’d suggest you do as much as you can this year to get to know the teachers writing your recs. Recs are important for any applicant at every top school. Extracurriculars are kind of all over the place, still good, but would be more competitive if you could find a way to tie them together.
