Hey so I was wondering if anyone would chance me for Carnegie Mellon Regular Decision.
(trying to major in engineering)

SAT: 630 R, 710 M, 670 W
Subject Tests: 780 Chinese, 690 Math II, just took Physics so don’t know yet
GPA: 4.09 weighted not sure what it’s out of i get A- and a few A’s
AP Psych 4
Course load this year: AP Stat, AP Euro, AP Physics B, English H, Architecture
(took Calc H last year but my school wouldn’t let me take AP Calc I hope this doesn’t hurt my chances)

EC
Nationally Ranked Competitive Climber - 5th in my region
Been on 2 week long mission trips 80+ hours
Leader of Worship Team at church, and camp counselor for church camp
Graduated from NOLS course (National Outdoor Leadership School) with an A
Leader in ALPS (an outdoors club at my school)
Part of Project Interact (service club) 20+ events
Front desk/cashier of a chinese take-out restaurant working there since 7th grade
Black belt in Karate

also applying to Cornell, Boston University, and Northeastern

I’m not well-versed in chancing but I would recommend at least touching briefly on your climbing. Admission reps likely see, “Debate…lacrosse…football…C-climbing?” and would like to see more of it, since they’re all about diversity. If you are a high-ranking black belt then I would recommend talking about it, too, but not if you’re vanilla. I got a black-belt when I was 9, basically just by attending lots of karate sessions and remembering certain sequences.

Nationally ranked competitive climbing is a rather exotic EC so I think it will help you. While the reachiest two schools are reaches, at least they’re reachable.

CMU: Reach
Cornell: Reach
BU: Match
NEU: Match

CMU is a reach because you are applying for engineering. If you are a URM it would become a low reach… Like everybody said it is great that you have a unique EC!

like hue said, I would definitely touch on your climbing, since it’s so unique. Your SAT makes Cornell a reach, but you’re most likely in at BU and probably NE. You have a strong chance at CM, but you have to really stand out with essays. Good luck!
