----Chance me please---- how much does volunteer work/internships matter?

Hey, everyone! I’m an incoming senior at a competitive high school in southern california

Ok so, the breakdown is:

GPA: (10-11) 3.89ish UW, 4.89ish W
(9-11) 3.84ish UW, 4.77ish W
(all As except 3Bs freshman year, 2Bs soph year, 1B junior year) <- by semeseter

SAT1: 2170: 760 math, 720 CR, 690 Writing

SATII: 780 bio-e, 790 US, (math in october)

ACT: 35composite: 36m, 35 sci, 35 english, 33 reading, 9 writing

APs, took 8 before senior year, seven 5s, one 4. -> national AP scholar
5s: euro, us, psych, bio, envisci, human geo, compgov
4s: world,

The problem is I don’t have any internships, jobs and barely any community service. I do have boyscouts (hopefully i’ll make eagle soon), cross country/track, and MUN though. I’m hoping my academic grades and scores will make up for my lack of volunteer work and internships.

I’m aiming for stanford, pomona, UCberkeley, and a few Ivys (columbia, yale, princeton, cornell)

I want to major in either history, law or polisci. If anyone has any suggestions for other colleges, that would be nice too.

Thanks so much.

bump bump bump?

Your GPA is very high, however the writing segment may hurt you alittle.
You have a fair chance, hence make sure your essay distinguishs you.
GoodLuck!

should i retake for a higher writing score? i’m pretty sure i can get an 11 or 12 on the ACT, i just wasn’t planning on retaking becuase i had a high composite.

thanks for the help, i’m going to start my essays soon

I would definitely retake it because it would give you a better edge over other students.

you seem to be a strong applicant.
the ivy’s are whatever, you never know.
maybe some leadership positions would strengthen your application.
you still have plenty of time to do some comm service this summer. go for it!! it will make you more well rounded.
some other schools might be georgetown (DC for poli sci and law) & Boston College… those are just a couple that I applied to (im going to BC in the fall)
good luck!!

He should definitely not retake the ACT since he has a 35! Don’t worry about the writing section, show your prowess through the essay. The fact that you have few ECs is what could do you in. You have strong test scores and a strong GPA, a very good combo. As for now, I would say the “lower” Ivies are low reaches while the “higher” Ivies are reaches. If you apply to every Ivy, I’d expect you’d be in at 4-5.

Thanks guys, yeah i was worried about the ECs, i’ve been slacking off in that department throughout all of high school.

I do have some leadership in boyscouts, and hopefully that’s my volunteer work as well.

Anyway, i doubt i’m going to retake the ACT, i’ll work hard on my essays though. Thanks for the advice everyone, and i’m definitely considering georgetown also as an option. And what are my chances at BC? I really haven’t looked into there.
