Brutal honesty is fine! I know UCB is likely a long shot, SJSU would be nice but not thrilled about the last two prospects. Need to stay close to the Bay Area so options are limited but more college suggestions are welcome.
CCC: Berkeley City College
Major: Social Welfare/Social Work
UC GPA: 3.7 (definitely could have done better. 19 A’s, 6 B’s and 1 funky C in BIO that will forever bug me)
Major Prep: Complete - straight A’s
IGETC: Complete
AA Degrees: Social & Behavioral Science Spring 2014 (Merritt), Political Science Spring 2018

STAR Act ADT: per assist.org SJSU only accepts an AA-T in Global Studies or Social Justice for this major, program comes with admission guarantee. I’d have to take three additional courses for the Global Studies degree which I’d rather not do, not entirely certain this would be necessary or worth it for acceptance. Social Justice is listed as in progress at Alameda College so not offered. Under the circumstances is it worth asking SJSU directly if my Political Science AA-T might possibly be considered an approved similar program?
Essays: rough draft of two answers looked over by an English professor, great feedback. Shared my experience surviving domestic violence and what led me to choose this major. Will definitely have everything looked over by a counselor and UCB in a few months once completed.
EC: volunteer weekly at local homeless shelter and SPCA, work experience dating back to 1999 - mainly accounts payable, payroll and administrative.
Upward Trend: 4.0 GPA final CCC semester, three POSCI classes, one SOC and STAT.
Transcript Concerns: 1 D, 1 F - both retaken with A’s, academic renewal completed. 5 W’s - two bc I simply couldn’t manage the course load, caring for my son and work at the time. Others were an attempt at a Clinical Medical Assistant certificate, not the right profession fit but something I had to experience to understand.
first gen, low income, minority (not 100% certain I’ll mention this), moved out when I was 17 and have worked full-time since, non-traditional 36 yr old student and single parent to a fantastic son with autism. Now that my son is comfortably capable of working and living independently as an adult I’d like to focus on my education. I plan on switching to part-time work next year.
This is an impacted major and my GPA is less than stellar, totally understand. Although I read here that admittance at UCB is mostly low bc not many actually apply here intending to major in Social Welfare? Not sure if thats accurate.
