Chance me PLEASE! USC, UCSD, UCB...or am i doomed for Community

Rising senior. I’m not very academic though
Sorry i realized after i was done that this is ridiculously long, so feel free to skip my details to the CONDENSED VERSION AT THE END where everythings in numbers
I REPEAT: SKIP TO THE END FOR CONDENSED VERSION

GPA detailed:
freshman year: 3.6 semester 1, 3.5 semester 2
sophomore year: 3.6 semester 1, 3.5 semester 2 (a C in chemistry for semester 2, 89 in english also)
junior year: 3.1 semester 1 (probably to be bumped to 3.3), 3.3 semester 2 (probably to bumped to 3.5). Yes, i epic failed this year. I got very VERY lazy, and just decided to give up completely on school partway though.

these are all unweighted.

With weighted, it would only impact my junior year. I took 4 weighted classes so that would make it 3.8 and a 4.0.

My courseload was decently rigorous. Freshman, sophomore year I took as many honors courses as a freshman or sophomore could take. Junior year i went a little easier on myself because i knew i would be burnt out after a summer of AP bio. Oh yeah, I took AP biology my sophomore summer

EC’s
-Volunteering at center for children with special needs since sixth grade. I can get an amazing LOR from these guys i think. Plus i genuinely do care about these kids, and its something i truly enjoy, so its possible that my essay, if i do it on this, can turn out decent even though i’m a terrible writer. Won the “ Student Volunteer of the Year” in 2009

  • piano since i was in 5th grade. Possibly even younger.
  • Track…freshman, sophomore, junior year. I lettered my junior year only, and got the most improved athlete award my sophomore year.
  • Cross country…sophomore, junior year. Junior year i lettered, about a 60% chance of lettering my senior year (its a fall sport). (varsity on cross country is crazy hard to get into (in my slow opinion at least :P), only 7 spots.)
  • odyssey of the mind since my sophomore year. I am a self-proclaimed team captain, and am currently the school clubs historian. We qualified for worlds sophomore year (but didnt go) getting second at states, and junior year we got third at states.
-volunteering at my local hospital since summer after sophomore year. Its decently hard to get into, at least as a junior.
  • I also participated in a program which helps freshmen adjust to highschool called senior buddy. I did it during my sophomore summer as well. I applied but didnt get in my junior summer
-Other clubs: key club freshman year and green club junior year. I think this would hurt my application though so i think imma omit these two

Summers
Freshman: took marine biology at UC berkeley with atdp. Was kind of a washout summer
Sophomore:
-did an internship at a company called secretbuilders. I was a content editor for the company, but its a little experience i guess
-Took AP bio at berkeley with atdp. This killed me.

  • senior buddy
  • worked at my local hospital 4 hours a week
    Junior:
  • worked in an opthamology hospital in india. I’m doing this because im legitly getting a crapload of experience in the medical field, not for college apps…aka i now know how to take blood, blood pressure, basic eye checkups, properly dilate an eye, pulse, weight, seen a major part of indian culture, watched eye surgeries, and hopefully by the end i can diagnose and know how to treat eye disorders. Yeah…but i dont think this will help me much on my college app either way just cause everyone does this whole " LETS PAY SOME COMPANY TO TAKE US TO A THIRDWORLD COUNTRY DURRRR". And most of the time they’re forced by their parents and colleges know that

AP scores:
Stat- 5 (i got a B in this class first semester which will show on my transcript)
Psych - 5
Bio - 5

SAT:
2070 :frowning: 680 CR, 700writing, 690 math
Hopefully i can bring this up. I took it twice, first time got a 2060, so im not sure. Also on my PSAT i got a 206. Im not good at the sat :(. I took classes and everything too. I just want that math to go up, i took january i think and got a freaking 5 wrong for a 690. That too, 3 of them were counted as easy by collegeboard, the other 2 were medium :/

sat 2:
math 2- 800
bio - 760

School: Very VERY competitive, but we dont disclose class ranks anymore :). I live in california

:P sorry for writing so much, but ANY advice would be helpful. Should i dish out the money for a college counselor? I really dont want to go to my community college, but i think i might end up there. Its not a bad thing…but i just thrive in a uber competitive environment, complete with stress, pressure and stuff like that. I wont do well in a community; i need the pressure to learn.

I do wish i learned about collegeconfidential as a freshman, and my EC’s, GPA, SAT’s and everything would have been drastically different. All my EC’s were done genuinely, which I dont especially regret, but i would have done things a little differently if i knew.

Sorry again for this being crazy long…

CONDENSED VERSION…SORRY FOR MAKING THIS SO LONG
To sum up:
GPA unweighted: 3.43 (possible bump to 3.5)
Weighted: 3.67

EC’s: decent
SAT 1: 2060
SAT 2: math - 800, bio-760
AP scores: bio-5; stat-5; psych-5
Other ramblings: Was in atdp – already in berkeley system, have not done any collegetours yet, essay will probably be moderate at best…im not a strong writer, indian-asian, live in california, competitive school

Please chance me for:
UC merced, UCSD, UC irvine, UC davis, UCB, USC, University of Michigan.

Yeah i know for sure im not getting into ivies and such

I don’t know much about california schools but don’t just think you only have a chance at community schools. Your sats are good and your gpa is good too. Apply to some reaches and safeties and matches. Does your school have naviance? Use that its really good. Good luck!

Merced- 99%
UCSD-50%
UC Irvine-50%
UC Davis-50%
UCB-0%
USC-0%
Michigan-30%

So definitely apply to UCSD, UCI, UCM. And yeah your right your not getting into the ivies.

I guess I’ll use percentages too :)

Right now:
Merced- 100%
UCSD-70%
UC Irvine-70%
UC Davis-40%
UCB-5%
USC-10%
Michigan-20%

Retake the SAT in october for 2150+ (I absolutely recommend this!!!) :
Merced- 100%
UCSD-100%
UC Irvine-80%
UC Davis-80%
UCB-20%
USC-30%
Michigan-50%

bump
Annoyingly enough i cant edit my original post.
Any other ideas where i should apply?

Apply to the University of Texas at Austin and Baylor University.

I’m planning on going into med school. Are those colleges good for bio and stuff?

Yes. Baylor University actually has one of the best medical schools in the country, which leads me to believe they have a great science department. Austin on the other hand I’m not so sure about.

A 3.1/3.2 Junior year is death; I don’t know enough about the UCs except for UCB so here goes:

UCB 1% - avg GPA is close to 3.9
USC 10% - 3.4 is well below the avg admit of 3.8 and 2060 is around the 25th%-tile
Michigan 15% - avg GPA around 3.7, OOS even tougher
Texas 1% - with the in-state 10% rule there aren’t many spots left for OOS

Try University of Arizona, University of Oregon or maybe Indiana University

i think PrincetonDreams has the most accurate chance thus far. Also, have you ever considered UCSB? It’s a good school and you would have a decent chance there.

Your GPA is on the low side for SD. 80% of admitted applicants have a GPA of 3.75+. Berkeley and USC are also high reaches. Your ECs are solid, but they won’t compensate for your GPA, especially because UCs are so numbers driven.

Spatula - is this a weighted or unweighted GPA?

bumpz.
Should i add other colleges to my list?
Would i be able to get into any 6 year med program? Anywhere?

Baylor University and Baylor school of medicine are not longer affiliates. There are still ties and there is still plenty of cross talk, but Rice is much more close (in terms of distance and relationship) to Baylor med than Baylor U.

mmm since junior year and your gpa is already set. If you can raise your SAT a little more, that would be good =)

Concentrate on SAT and Essay =]

all hope is not lost for the schools you listed. =) you’ll do fine. don’t stress about it.
