Rising senior from NY.
I go to a very competitive school in upstate NY and my school does not have rankings.

My GPA is 3.5 ( I know it’s low)
Honors and AP courses: geometry honors, Pre- calc honor, world history honor, AP chemistry, AP physic B, AP biology, AP literature, AP Calculus BC, and AP world history (self studied).

My ACT: 26 ( I took it for the first time in June 2011 with little studying but now over the summer I have been taking a ACT prep course and is improving. I’m going to take the ACT again aiming for a 30)

My ECs:
I volunteer at a nursing home from my freshmen year to my sophomore year (300+ hours).
I also volunteer at a local hospital over 2 summer (50+ hours).
I am a special sitter ( taking care of mentally ill people) count as volunteering.
I also work as a host at a restaurant over 1 summer.
So overall I focused my ECs on volunteering :)

Thank you for reading this and please chance me!!! :)

BU is getting much harder to get into these days. Class of 2015’s acceptance rate was 48% and it’s only going to get lower. You are going to need a higher ACT (the range is 26-30), so aim for a 29/30. Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? If unweighted it’s ok, if weighted it’s definatly on the low side. I think at the moment BU is a low reach, but if you can get the ACT up a couple points you will be a much stronger applicant.

My GPA is unweighted.

Ok, I’d still pu BU as a low reach for you. Get your ACT up to a 28 and it will be a target.

Okay thank you! I took an ACT practice test and got a 28 and I have been taking a prep course for ACT so I’ll def improve. So do you think BU would be my target school if I get my ACT up to like a 29/29/30 range? Oh and did u take the ACT or SAT?

I think you would be a solid match if you got a 29 or 30. I took the SAT and applied to BU last year. I had a 2100 (780 math, 660 CR, 660 writing) and generous FA from them. A 2100 is like a 31 ACT? Maybe, I don’t really know the translation.

Did u get in? Where else did you apply?

You should be in. Don’t Sweat it

Yes I got in with a scholarship. I applied to 16 schools, but to name a few: College of the Holy Cross, Boston College, Villanova, and Fordham. In the end I went to my first choice, Holy Cross. My top 3 choices were HC, BC, and BU (I really wanted to be in/around Boston)

Lily, how big of a scholarship did they give you?

80% of tuition (it came out to 30,500)

Nice. did you take any SAT II subject tests? what was your GPA?

If you improve your ACT to atleast a 29, do well with your courseload and write a pleasant essay, I think it’d be a definite match. I’m applying there too! The campus, food and school itself were great. I wish you luck! :)
