otrebmu: big reach. A big reach for San Diego. Reach for Santa Barbara and Irvine, and Davis. A slight reach for Santa Cruz. A match for Riverside.

Thank you both for your opinions.

A slight reach for Santa Cruz… riight. LA, SD, SB, Davis, and Irvine I can understand, but santa cruz, not so much. riverside lmao

Do you think i’d be worth a shot to even apply to ucla as long as I score above a 2000 on sat i and 650’s on ii?

I hope everyone is aware that my comment to insta was tongue in cheek. His scores and courseload alone are incredible.

^^dude i think u have a shot at everything just apply…admissions get randy sometimes.

thanks for the encouragement. I have oct and nov to take the i and ii’s, with dec available for whichever tests needs to be raised more.

Chance me too, please? :D

Super competitive, Asian high school in California. -_-
UC GPA: haven’t calculated exact yet… somewhere between 3.6~3.8
(I know, it’s realllly bad!)
BUT there’s an upward trend from sophomore year to junior year.
No APs, but I did have 3 Honors junior year.

SATI: 2070 CR 640 M 710 W 720
Retaking in November.

SATIIs: Math 750. Chinese 730. Taking Biology in October

ECs: Colorguard/Winterguard (Best rookie freshmen year :P). Tons of Girl Scouts leadership activities and awards. Worked at children afterschool-school this summer. Interned at a pharmaceutical cancer research company in Canada this summer.

BUT this is the main thing I’m wondering if gives me any nice edge to my application, since my GPA is my admission killer:
I’m in this program called College Advantage for senior year of high school. Kind of like middle college in most places BUT this is more for high-achieving kids who want the college classes and environment. Basically, my courseload for the whole year is college classes at one of the best community colleges in California. (De Anza, which the UC’s recognize and have good relationships with.) I’m hoping to get all A’s in my college classes this year. (Too bad the UC app is due before I can show them my college transcript…)

I know that my academics and EC’s are not that impressive. And I’m hoping this senior year will really improve my application. But I’ve been dreaming of attending UCLA ever since sixth grade haha. And you’ve got to admit, the past two years, it seems like the UCLA admissions office just pulls names out of hats to admit/reject them. So, my hopes are still high…?![]()
Thanks, especially if you read all that! haha

I would say slight reach, bruinj. If only your GPA was at least a 4.0 weighted, you would have a very good chance. You have good activities.

BTW, should I even bother to put my ACT score on the application?? I took it once just to see how I’d do and my composite score was 31. It’s not that great but I’m not planning on taking it again either.

bruinj:

UCLA: Slight Reach

otrebmu - The mean GPA at UCLA is UC GPA 4.17. Very few make in in with under 4.0. At Irvine/Davis/San Diego are all around 3,8-4.0 mean. Getting down to Santa Cruz is about 3.7 BUT… the problem is your 1780 SAT, that’s why I said slight reach. Assuming you bring the SAT up to your hoped for 2000, then Santa Cruz is a match, and you might sneak into one of the Irvine/Davis/Santa Barbara trio.

thanks i understand
I just think with community service, sports, and good sat i and ii scores santa cruz would be a safety. santa barbara would be nice. i guess i’ll apply to ucla but i don’t see why they’d accept me

otrebmu – actually upon researching this further, YOU are correct and I understated even your current position (current SAT).

Here is a UC site in which you can choose the schools in question. These data do suggest that Santa Cruz is a safety for you, Irvine/Santa Barbara/Davis are match/slight reach, San Diego is probably about 35% (see discussion below about the large SAT range – you are toward the top of the 1500-1800 band), and UCLA is at about 15% (same comment about SAT range band).

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx)

Choose from the menus:

1) Undergraduate Admission
2) Freshmen entered from High School
3) Fall 2007
4) California Residents
5) UCLA, UCD, UCSB, UCD, UCI, UCSC
6) Admissions rates and counts
7) Simple Table
8) High School GPA, Weighted, Capped -and- Total SAT Reasoning Score
9) Run Table

The SAT ranges are very large within each band, so keep in mind the ave. acceptance at 1825 is a lot lower than the ave acceptance at 2075, even though both are in the 1800-2100 band. There is a curve within each band that is not specified here.

Dunnin, thanks for the link! that’s great info on that site

it’s funny, the admit rate for private CA schools vs. public was lower for every school except ucsc. granted I pull up my scores ucsd is a possibility, but ucla <10%. The others shouldn’t be too much problem. At this point, SD and SB engineering are enticing.

thank you again

bumping this back up. seen a couple new chances threads lately. consolidate!

UCLA: Slight Reach

all that work just to be a “slight reach” seriously why even try?

Lmao, my thoughts exactly. If I’d known beforehand I might not have, but alas, que sera, sera.

translation: but wings, whatever will be will be

I wonder if kids really like doing all that crap. If they do enjoy it, then it’s fine, but if they just do it for the sole purpose of getting into a college, well that’s just a waste of time. Honestly, looking back, i wouldn’t have done any of it. I’d be like **** it, and gotten a job and get paid. Then just write about my hardships in my statements about how I wanted to do all those ECs and community services, BUT i couldn’t because i’m low income and I needed the money to save up for college and pay some home bills and stuff. Now looking back I should have applied to Harvard or something. I bet I would have gotten in…OH and one of those fancy scholarships.

wait i read an early post about someone having a 4.7 uc GPA, is that even possible? i thought the highest was like 4.35
