please chance me??
im worried…
i dont think i lack ec’s that much, and people say that my gpa is okay.
but im a very bad at standardized tests. my test scores don’t reflect my school transcripts and i dont even know if this makes sense but basically im worried my test scores will be the reason ill get rejected from bc…

p.s.
how is BC with financial aid and study abroad programs??

Dear leader93 : In the last three years of chance-me threads that I have answered here on college confidential, I cannot remember a single instance of an ACT composite score of 28 where the essay score is 11.

Given that you are opting out of sending your SAT scores, you clearly have SAT I scores below the score-equivalent of your ACT 28. (But with Biology and Math I SAT II scores both at 650, how is that possible?) Then, we couple these numbers together with your reported AP exam scores of 5/4/4.

From a pure numbers standpoint, the 28 score is so out of line (and you raise it as a major point yourself), that one can only wonder how that score is possible against everything else reported. As for BC, a composite score of 28 is well into the bottom quartile. If you have sectional scores in the 25-26 range, you can expect that those scores could well disqualify your application. So, the ACT breakdown is now more important than ever.

That said, your essay will be CRITICAL since your leadership, volunteerism, club activity, music and honors are strong.

i agree with what you said but i never realized my essay score was way out of line with my test score…

in case you are wondering, i opted not to send my SAT’s because i took them a very long time ago (beginning of junior year) and never took them again. if your wondering, i scored pretty well on the writing section, average on the math and a 550 on reading which is why i’m opting not to send it.

i am very good at writing opinionated essays because i had a lot of practice on them, which is why i got an 11.
the problem was my science and reading scores. it was my first act and i had no idea that i would be so pressed for time. if you’re wondering my scores in math and english were both over 30 while reading and science were 25’s.

anyways, thank you for your truthful response.
i guess all i can do now is perfect my essay and pray that my test scores soon to come are better than that 28.

Dear leader93 : What an interesting dichotomy - poor reading scores coupled to opinionated essay writing. You could certainly think that topic in itself could be a very central part of your essay’s theme.

There is something else for you to consider. While you have a passion for Boston College, I would strongly urge you to become very familiar with the required academic core. Moreso than many liberal arts core curriculums, you will be very pressed in both reading and writing skills. Hence, you might want to weigh those needed freshman year courses in your thinking about school.

Interesting is that you did well on the ACT “social studies” section as opposed to the science and reading. Yours is a very interesting case and certainly not the mainstream applicant profile!

I have nothing to add to the above comments, but on the subject of study abroad aid, any aid you receive from BC applies if you do an internal study abroad program (run by BC through a partnership with another school), of which there are several. If you do an external program (run by another school) you won’t get your BC aid but may end up paying less based on the cost of the program. Internal programs charge regular BC tuition. Either way, this would be years off for you.

I got my oct. act score today so please ignore the score at the top. my score is 31

leader93-Your ACT went from a 28-31? How did you do that? What subjects went up? ddi you get a tutor for the subjects you were doing poorly in? That will surely boost your chances. Give us some feedback…

chirscollege- yes, it did. i got a 28 on the sept. 2010 ones and a 31 on the oct 2010 ones. I did not get a tutor. i went up in all my subjects. i went up to a 34 in english, had the same score in math (32), and went up to a 31 to reading (from prev 25) and a 28 in science (from prev 26). all i did was study pretty hard the week before i took it.
i focused a lot on science and reading because those were my poor subjects. i did not practice math or english section at all, which is why my math score stayed the same. my english (weirdly) went up from a 30 to a 34…
anyways if u’re still preparing for the ACT’s good luck and thanks for the reply!
