And senior year im taking AP Physics B Ap US History and AP LIterature as well as Pre Calculus,

My GPA has increased every year
9th-3.22
10th-3.65
11th-3.8

SAT- Math=580 and Reading = 550

UMD is my number one choice and I really want to attend this school so honest opions will help.

You want to apply to Smith? (I’m guessing by Accounting)
If so, your chances are weak because of your SAT (GPA is fine though, unless that’s weighted)
Letters and Sciences though can easily happen and you can just apply to Smith your sophomore year.

Yes the school of business. But do i have a chance of getting into UMD though.

I’d say that unless there’s something scary in your letters of recommendation, you’ve got strong enough stats to get in. Agree with Euroazn that you may not initially get into Smith, but you can transfer in. Don’t expect any merit aid, and probably none of the special programs, but as an IS student, you’re in good shape, I believe.

I agree with astro…be thankful you are IS, because if you were OOS, I would say no chance.

I say that because UMD is a stat driven school and 1130 on an SAT is very low for their school stats. Your gpa, hopefully it is uw, and not w. gives breathing room because they understand sometimes good students are bad test takers.

I will say with that amount of AP’s if 3.54 is weighted, I would say that it is not a given.
The main reason why is our economy is in the tanks. Kids who had dreams of going OOS or private may be forced to apply to UMDCP for fiscal reasons. UMDCP has limited spots. The more that apply, the more selective they can becom. 3.54 w on a 4.5 or 5.0 scale is a big issue in this. 3.54 uw is still a good gpa on a 4.0 even with an 1130.

I have to say I get a little apprehensive when students ask for a chance, give an overall gpa, plus their classes, but do not acknowledge the grades in the class or if it is a w or uw. I am someone who thinks, you gave a lot of info, but are you shading the facts? I immediately wonder if that gpa is weighted or unweighted?

I think your SAT score keeps you out. Sorry, but without something special to go along with these scores (and not to be cruel, but i don’t see it) i think you’re a Freshman Connection student.

What is a freshman connection?

I am very sorry that gpa is weighted. But i would hope that the admissions office will appreciate my dedication and rise in grades over the years and taking advance classes.

Certainly grades trending upwards is a good thing. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. You had your app in before the Nov 1 priority date, right?

Yeah… weighted is a bit worse.
You can forget the business school now xD
But… it’s still possible that you get in to letters and sciences…

well even if you apply for the business school, your application is first viewed for admission to the entire school. after you are admitteed to the school, then you are reviewed for your specific major. I think you’ll get into UMD definetely, and have at least a decent chance at the business school. It’s not as competititve as all the people up here^ are making it seem.

Business school averages are 3.95 weighted and 1350ish SAT (1600 scale)… I’m just saying…

That is perfectly fine. I just need to attend the University… I am debating on a history major as well… I have a 4 on the AP Gov exam and sure i will have a 5 on the AP Us History exam. But UMD is definitely my school… Thank You very much everyone.

Yes i applied before November 1.

Freshman connection, means you have been admitted to UMDCP, but not in the traditional sense until Spring. You will be allowed to take courses in the fall, but only from 3-9 pm. You can go to games as a student, bu not live in the dorms. Your fall courses will still count to your major, and you will still be a fulltime student.

Come January you will be able to move into the dorms and take classes morning, noon or night.

Honestly, 3.54w with a 1130 SAT even for gen admittance places you on the brink. I think because you are going to a magnet, that will get you in, since UMDCP places course rigor and school into the equation.

The problem for you maybe that once in, academically might be uphill. Education is a foundation, and when you get to the college level, there is a no excuses mentality. It is a big girl/boy program. Becareful of your course selection as a freshman so yo can transition easily. Many kids have problems because their classes are 200+ and they just plow through the material. You need to plot out your schedule so that you are not just having 200+ classes that break down into groups taught by TAs.

BTW if you google UMD and Science technology hs schools, last yr, they stated that they created a program for 3 specific counties or schools due to their science program. I can’t remember anything about it except for that vague description, because we are not MD residents. I do remember it was a new program, and I think they were even offering a % of scholarships just to applicants from these schools. SOrry, I can’t help more, but I would talk to your GC to see if they know of it, or call UMD admissions. Like I said it was to select schools or counties in MD and it was science oriented, just don’t if it was for a student from the science magnet school per se, or science major for kids from any school in those counties.

Thank You i know a friend now that is doing freshman connection so that will be perfectly fine.
