Chance Me: Purdue, NCSU, RIT, UNC, Georgia Tech, V Tech

You can go to UMN ENG site and go to their job fair for a listing of the companies that attend. As most on here have been telling you, local companies are the best bets for a job, in this case, Target, 3M, Boston Scientific, Cargill, Best Buy, US Bank, etc. There is nothing to prevent you from reaching out to Google, of course.
I am having trouble with the word “prestigious”, just like many other posters on this thread. It sounds kind of silly, to me. The sooner you get over that word, the better, IMO.
UMN has a solid rep as an ENG school. The departments that are most well thought of are ChemE and BIOMED, but most of the departments are very solid. The CS dept is pretty big(1000 students, I think?), and housed in Keller Hall, which is modern and pretty nice. CS is probably easier to survive in than CMU, Waterloo, or the like, but keep in mind that if you are really that smart you can go in Honors, double major, do research with grad students/profs. I know one friend of S1’s who has done exactly that at MN, after being turned down by MIT. He has already done numerous internships with Google, and is being fawned over by FAANG. He is not a normal student however. He is truly bright, if not brilliant. He also pays nothing in tuition, as opposed to the 250K he would’ve paid going to MIT, CMU, Cornell, or the like.

Only if you can afford it. Did you run the NPC for Johns Hopkins?

They send a lot of emails to get their application numbers up.

Don’t take it personally, it’s not a judgment on you as a person. Think of the sorting hat in Harry Potter; there’s a bit of the unknown in why some people are picked and others aren’t. Sometimes the admissions office will admit people with lower stats because they have unique characteristics; it’s a matter of providing “balance” to the entering class.

Reviews are holistic. Not just stats.

Love those that love you back. You’ll have fine opportunities to pursue you desired major. In fact you already do.

I just went back to the top of the thread. I just read the first 6 or so messages.

It gives you insight to what you thought vs the challenging environment.

You’ll still be fine !! You’ll get into many/most.

Obvious answer is probably the right one. Purdue CS is very competitive.

why pick business school as second option when data science would have been a closer option to CS?

Frankly, I don’t know. I didn’t know the reputability of their data science program.

That’s true, but people with similar stats as me got in.

I appreciate the reassurance. I don’t have any schools that I want to go to just yet, but I have about 30 schools that I’m still waiting for. Just hoping for the best. I don’t want Purdue to be a prediction of what will happen to the other top schools in my list.

Your error is worrying about reputability. As you said about data science. Kids look at this. You think employers know who is tops or #30 or #80 in data science?

All the kids jump on the marketing bandwagon. Most employers aren’t short of the very top.

Michigan Tech. Missouri S&T. ASU are all Fantastic.

Are your stats from message one still the same ?

If you read the top messages they told you that some of the schools would be a reach. That’s ok. If you don’t get turned down somewhere you didn’t go high enough.

Everyone like you applies to Purdue. It’s cheap. It’s well thought of. Kids love it. So they have far more than they can take.

Your app is far more than about gpa and sat. Every school has lower stat get in over higher stats if they review holistically .

You’ll be fine. You applied to a ton and you already have 3 highly respected names you were accepted to.

I appreciate it. It’s just a personal goal of mine to attend a school that is commonly heard of, like Purdue for STEM. Will it be cheap for me to attend OOS? How much would it cost, on average?

I really want to get into NCSU and UNC. Both very close to home and have amazing CS programs. They will also be cheap.

And no, my stats from the first post changed a bit. A little higher SAT score and GPA. I received all As my first semester of senior year.

Thank you

Even if you go by CS ranking by US News, Minnesota at #37 is a good choice.

The fact you ask that worries me in how you selected your list. You should only have applied to schools you could possibly or definitely afford.

And UMN is awesome as are the three you got into. Did you get in there ??

You have some great stats and a lot of dedication to complete all of the applications that you did. Knowing the cost of a program is one of the initial steps in researching a college. Since you are unaware of Purdue’s costs, I suspect you are about the remainder of your schools. This weekend I would make a spreadsheet (or add columns to your spreadsheet) that have the appropriate tuition (in-state or OOS, as appropriate), room & board, and possibly the COA. Do that for every school that has accepted you or from whom you are still awaiting a final decision. For every school that has offered you merit aid, reduce the cost of attendance by that amount. Then you can start comparing apples to apples. Are the job placements of X university worth $X more money per year or not? Are the smaller classes worth $x? But thinking about colleges without knowing their cost is essentially the same as thinking they’re all the same cost. It’s like if someone was looking at cars and saying I’m thinking about buying a Ford, a Honda, a BMW, or a Lamborghini. Hmm, how much is the BMW? Please research the costs of all the institutions you’re considering. Saying it’s in-state so it’ll be pretty cheap is not the same as knowing that one university is going to cost $20k vs a different one at $40k, $65k, or $80k.

I bet you will get in NC State and most likely UNC. UNC-C is pretty good for CS related things, too.

Purdue had problems with overcrowding this year, didn’t they? Might be better off somewhere else, really.

(Oops, didn’t mean to reply to you @AustenNut , obviously for @rd123456 )

Get in where? UMN? Yes.

And thank you for linking the Purdue fee website. That’s quite expensive. I thought Purdue had fairly low OOS fees for attendance? 41k…wow. Do you think it’ll be lower, maybe 35K or less?

I will make sure to do that as soon as possible and evaluate. Thank you for the input.

hmmm - $41K is dirt cheap.

You need to do what @AustenNut said. This obviously should have been done before you picked schools - but Purdue full pay is one of the better deals out there.

Your best will be schools you’ll find beneath you (but shouldn’t) - Alabama, Arizona, MS State and more…just listing schools you could still apply to.

For sure. I’ll take a look.
And yeah, I thought 41k was expensive because attending NCSU or UNC will only cost me about 25k, and they are both amazing schools for their value.
