Chance Me: Purdue, NCSU, RIT, UNC, Georgia Tech, V Tech

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I will show continued interest. Out of my list, which would you categorize as matches and which are reaches?

are these still your stats?

Where did you apply TO?

Rank: 40/503 (about top 8%)
GPA(Unweighted): 3.958 (I got just my one and only B in AP Calc BC)
GPA(Weighted): 4.52
SAT: 1450 (680 E, 770 M)

Yes, those are still my stats except with a 1470 SAT (700 EBRW, 770 M) and a 4.54 GPA.

I applied to all except all the RD schools listed at the end. CS major.

First of all and just looking at your RD, why don’t you cull the list. You like UMN and U of SC and both are excellent. What’s the point of having 20 or 25 acceptances or rejections. What are you trying to accomplish ?

To do the essays properly, you need more time.

That said I’m an amateur like the rest. We are not AOs. But my opinion is…

Baylor yes

Northeastern - match but 49% in - meaning I won’t be surprised if you get in but bcuz it’s RD and not EA, my guess is no.

Harvard no.

Hopkins - no

Cmu - no

Vandy - no

Cornell - maybe - but highly unlikely

Duke - no

Why not just apply to a couple of these ?

Are you sure you can afford them ?

These are so very different so other than high ranked, what is the flow here.

You need to find the right school, not the highest ranked.

It would be better for you if you went to a school that you can afford, meets your needs, stimulates you intellectually, and prepares you for the next stage of your life. This may be a very different place than “a top ranked school.”

Thanks for the chances. I was meaning to ask you to chance me for the EA schools, haha. Not RD.

I don’t know if I can afford them but will see if I get accepted and the financial aid package comes.

Yield protection? Personally, I don’t see a fit with Fordham that aligns with your goals. With so many apps, it may be your essays were not too focused? Who knows - anyway, it will be too expensive even if you get in and get some merit. So far, Univ of South Carolina and ASU look to be the best in terms of program quality in CS. Best of luck with the rest of your apps.

Thanks for the input. A lot of people said I was yield protected - I guess I should feel good about that, lol. And I think my essay was focused - they only had a short 200 word prompt and I talked about a specific prof in there as well. You’re right about me not attending - it’s okay.

Wouldn’t UMN be the best option for me for CS? It is ranked fairly highly and has a moderately low acceptance rate for engineering.

Thank you.

This is where you made the mistake.

I don’t know if I can afford them is the wrong answer. The answer should be, based on the net price calculator, I can afford them.

In other words, if you need money, then why are you, without checking the net price calculator, applying to Harvard, for example.

I know - you want to see if you can get in - but they have zero merit aid and if the NPC shows you that you’ll get no money, it makes zero sense to apply, etc.

You should have done that for every school.

It’s almost like - you are throwing 35 darts up so you can brag you got into 25, etc.

You had so many safeties - so while it’s fine and you will end up somewhere (sounds like UMN or U of SC at this point), this was far from an efficient process for you and with little flow as to what makes it the right school for you.

This is where you are too focused on rank.

UMN is a great school and they’ll place people - both locally and nationally. Minnapolis is a corporate hotbed.

ASU is a great school - and they’ll place people - both locally and nationally. Arizona is becoming more and more tech.

But with CS you’re going to find jobs anywhere.

Do you like the cold? Because MN is colder than you can imagine, etc.

There’s more than just rank…and that’s the issue here.

You are applying to schools you are reading about in US News or whatever rank you are using.

You have to spend four years there, day after day.

There are Harvard kids that fall short…and there are kids at Eastern Carolina that will hit big in life.

it’s about you!!!

If i had to guess - and again, i’m an amateur, I’d say yes to NC State, Va Tech, and likely UNC and no to the rest.

But my guess means nothing.

Time will tell for you.

Good luck.

So - and I used Niche - there’s so many rankings - NC State is 64 and UMN is 69. But would you choose NC State over UMN if - you loved snow, urban, and tunnels - just because it’s ranked higher - regardless of fit and finances ?

You are focused on the wrong thing is my point - well is everyone’s point.

But i do appreciate your honest and enjoy the exercise. Interested to see how my predictions perform

Yes - it’s well ranked. was skimming through your posts and didn’t notice you got in there as well. Can you afford the OOS tuition? Do you like the cold?

if MN is too cold for some, i am pretty sure tempe,AZ is too hot for some as well.

I would focus more on the social fit and dig into the quality of the CS programs and any specializations that are of interest (like cyber security) that they offer.

UMN usually doesn’t give out merit till the late winter, unless you are an outstanding student. S2 (in state) has got in to CompE(same building as CS, unlike schools like GT and WI). He regards it as a safety, but also regards it as the school that might fit him best. It is a pretty nice setup there… we know lots of kids in CS, and have been to the campus many times. Let me know if you have any questions.

Do FAANG companies come to recruit on campus often? Is it prestigious in the engineering field, specifically CS and CE?

Look on the employment websites at their college recruiting info. Each comPany will have one. And there’s many more companies than FANG.

Just a BTW — a friend’s daughter went to NC State for comp sci and worked for about a year in Minneapolis afterwards (not sure of the company, sorry) and is now working for Microsoft! Just thought it was funny since we were talking about NCSU and UMN.

Just got an email about Johns Hopkins EDII. Should I go with this plan? I know I should probably calculate costs but if all is well in that aspect, is it a viable option for me?

Cool! Congrats to her - she’s doing awesome! Want to do the same!

You asked the right question. Should I calculate cost?

I think you know the answer.

You ED if it’s your clear top choice.

Everyone emails you and pushes ED. Even after you apply RD they email you and offer you to change to ED.

That’s marketing. ED benefits them. It’s a guarantee.

Have you talked money with your parents.

Plus since you’re all about rank…what if you ED 2 but then get into Harvard or CMU. That’d be a rank travesty.

Hmmmmm. No don’t ED. You are playing with serious fire here.

You need discipline and a plan. You have neither it seems like.
