Native American (Federally Enrolled in the Chippewa-Cree tribe, I live on a reservation)
Essay is about me transferring to an all white school as a Native American (like The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian)

I know that my lack of AP classes and low ACT will drag me down, but hopefully my essay and URM status will help even those out. I plan to go into either chemistry with a minor in polysci or vice versa.

Not taking AP Calculus may hurt you since you are applying for a STEM field, but colleges will consider the fact that your school does not offer many AP courses.

Overall, as long as you are near top of your class, your chances should be respectable given your circumstances. However, Yale and Stanford are definite reach schools for you. You will probably get accepted to WUStL, although I advise you to apply to more than just 3 schools.

Wow, your story is so interesting. Your heritage and demographic will certainly help, just get your scores up. Colleges, to my knowledge, judge you in the context of your school/area, so if you’re doing the most challenging stuff that your school offers, even if it’s way less than other schools, is still really good. Good luck!

I think your background will give you a significant boost, but echoing ^^^ see if you can get your ACT score up a little and I’d definitely add in a few other schools to your list. Stanford and Yale aren’t guarantees for anyone, and WU is no cake walk to get into either.

Thank you all for the replies! To clarify, I’m applying to other schools that I’ll list here. (those are just my top three)
Columbia
University of Rochester
Vanderbilt
University of Pennsylvania
Harvard (I just want to see if I get in, don’t plan on attending)
University of Chicago
and three Montana schools in which I already have been admitted.

@lamestprincess Is it too late to maybe try and apply to a few more likelies? Other than the Montana schools and Rochester your list is very reach heavy. The rest of your application is very solid, but your ACT could still eliminate you from these schools and having another Rochester’s selectivity could be a good thing unless you like the schools in Montana.

Your application is strong, I think you at least have a decent chance at WUSTL.

Yale - High Reach
Stanford - High Reach
Columbia - High Reach
University of Rochester - Low Reach
Vanderbilt - Reach
University of Pennsylvania - High Reach
Harvard (I just want to see if I get in, don’t plan on attending) - High Reach
University of Chicago - High Reach

Things that could drag you down:

Low ACT score

No AP Courses until senior year of High school - raises a lot of questions regarding course rigor, especially if the only AP’s are taken online

Pre-Calc Senior year? That would probably be the biggest issue, I’ve never heard of anyone admitted to any top schools who haven’t at least taken Calc 1. I thought all schools were required to at least offer Calculus, even if it’s not an AP variant.

Under normal circumstances I’d probably say you have very small/no chances at these schools, but your being Native American is a HUGE plus to your application. Remember to apply to safeties and match schools just in case.

Completely agree with the above comment. You have the strongest hook I’ve seen. Apply to some other good schools. Maybe research if any schools have Native American initiatives specifically.

Today I received my early notification stating that I have been accepted to Stanford University!!

@lamestprincess I came to this thread after seeing your post on the official Stanford applicants thread. Congratulations!

Today I received my early notification stating that I have been accepted to Brown University!

@lamestprincess Since you were able to get into Stanford, there is almost no doubt you will get into Yale and WUSTL as well as all the other places you applied to. Most probably you will get into Harvard as well.

Is Stanford your first choice?

Congrats!!

@Penn95 I don’t really have a first choice but my decision will ultimately come down to either Stanford or Yale. I’m going to visit both in order to see which one is right for me.

@lamestprincess that makes sense. At this level fit is most important so it is smart to visit both and see for yourself. Also try to understand the strengths of each school in chemistry and polisci and what are the research, fellowship etc opportunities they offer in this fields and also the general academic philosophies of each school. Stanford and Yale are definitely quite different in terms of campus vibe and culture, social life and academic approach.

I received a likely from Columbia today!

I got a likely from Cornell!

I was accepted to the University of Chicago!

@lamestprincess As the trend speaks, I think you are getting into Yale too! Best of luck for the hard choice you are gonna have to make  May you rise!
