@Max2020 do I even have a shot at getting in with only 4 APs which are all in my senior year? I have taken 5 honors classes this year as a junior.

This is what they want. Read through it. The moto and meaning of leaders and best means something to them.
Look at Naviance for your school. Your compared to your school /region. If this is normal you can’t compare to an all honors school with having 6-8 Aps is the norm. Asking people from different states etc isn’t going to give you your answer. FYI
@Knowsstuff yes, I am aware. Naviance data does not seem very accurate because it is over the past 10 years or so, and college admissions stats can fluctuate over that time.
@stevensmith123 PM me if you want to talk but agree with @Knowsstuff your Naviance or guidance counselors can tell you based on you school where you stand. Your ACT scores are great but you will need your senior year grades to be A’s and you need strong EC’s and letters of recommendation.
You can also get the last 3 years data. Talk to your counselor. It is a ball park also not an exact science. Also look at the CDS https://obp.umich.edu/campus-statistics/common-data-set/
So, if UM allows people to defer their admission and takes more people off the waitlist, doesn’t that significantly hurt chances for 2025 applicants? More deferrals means less spots for next year. I’m also concerned that UM will overcompensate for the fewer international applicants by taking more next year, to the detriment of domestic applicants. Anyone have thoughts? thanks
@Kolesar99 good questions. Both are possibilities.
Yep. ^^. This will happen. They had offers out to about 350 extra students this application season. Between now and June they will see that their real numbers are. They will need OOS and full pay internationals next year for many reasons.
By “domestic”, I meant all of the U.S. I’m from OOS so I hope that OOS wouldn’t be adversely affected next year by deferrals this year, but I’m not optimistic.
Question: I will be applying to UM next year. I would love to go to Ross, but would be very happy with LS&A as well. When you do your "why do you want to go to UM essay?, do you focus on Ross only in that essay? I’m worried that if I just focus on Ross, UM will be less inclined to admit me to LS&A if I don’t get into Ross. Thanks.
@Kolesar99 My son felt the same way and was not accepted to Ross and he did include the strengths of LSA and Ross and what they meant toward his goals. Even if accepted to Ross many of your classes will be in LSA, Economics, Stats, Math courses…be sure too to be specific about where you can see yourself getting involved on campus, clubs organizations etc. My sons “portfolio” for Ross was not strong, he was more suited for Economics/Statistics tract and can still go into analytical jobs from there and has been very happy with LSA all around.
I think you have a good chance. I am going to Michigan next year and I did a couple things that I think helped me a lot:
- emailed my rep telling them michigan was my #1 choice and if accepted I would attend
- had my guidance counselor include in her rec that michigan was my #1 choice and if accepted I would attend
- Had a very specific "why michigan" essay
Also, yes send both of your scores. even though they don’t technically superstore, michigan will consider the highest section across all of your tests. In reference to your lack of APs and bad freshman year grades make sure to emphasize your upward trend (specifically ask your guidance counselor to do this in their rec).
Sorry I’m late to the conversation, but I wanted to give you my advice on writing your essay on a medical condition. I was accepted this year and will be attending Ross this fall. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when I was 4 years old, so I totally understand what your taking about with incurable medical problems at no fault of your own. A lot of people told me to be cautious writing about it. There’s a fine line between telling a story and a so called “pity party” they said. But I went for it anyways because it was important to me. I agree with what others said that the first paragraph might be the most important part because you have to grab their attention. Start off with a great intro that will grab them into your life/story. I think what made my essay good is that there was almost a “redemption” type part of my essay on how I’m using my disease to inspire others. I created a insta account for the Crohn’s community that has over 10k followers now and posts peoples questions anonymously and shares their stories. Also, I wrote about how I have used my experiences to help other kids in the hospital going through the same surgeries I went through and how I was somewhat of a mentor for them. Like others said, they want to see leadership and how you turned a negative into a positive to help as many people as possible. Sorry for such a long post, but I would definitely write about your condition cause it’s a big part of who you are, but at the same time turn it into a positive story where you showed some kind of leadership to help others in your community!
I know I’m late, but I think you have a solid chance on getting into Umich as long as you can positively frame yourself in your essays. Your academic involvement later on in your high school career really shows personal growth
2 Questions: (1) will all of the COVID deferments impact the chances of Fall 2021 admits or do people think UM will just admit a larger class in Fall 2021; and (2) does anyone think the UM’s ACT scale will fall from 32-35 for the 50% for 2021? I’m sitting on a 32 ACT, and am wondering whether students inability to take the ACT multiple times this year will increase the amount of students they accept with a 32 or 33. Thanks.
Great questions. We will have to see in a few weeks how many will actually show up to school. Internationals will be less here and mostly everywhere this year. Michigan’s numbers have been really consistent for the last 4 years. But time will tell. 32 is a great score. Equal that with a great application especially the essay. Take a rigorous senior year and do well in those classes.
