You do have a hook, but you still need to bring up your test score a lot.

@billcsho what should I try to bring my sat up to? Also, what should I try for on the ACT?

Even with hook, you need to aim at at least the 25th percentile. For UMich, that would be 2040 in SAT and 30 in ACT. Better yet, aim at the admission average (2160/32)

With that SAT score, adcoms will look down on your school competitiveness (if not on you). You need to raise it significantly (by 300+) to have any hope.

Even better, get it to the 75th percentile. With a double hook, leadership and athletics that will likely get you in. You can take the ACT w writing too, some people do much better on it (33-34 is 75th percentile) . (son got 2070/36!) Questions are more straightforward but there is less time to complete them.

Michigan and UCLA cannot consider race/ethnicity as a factor in admissions by state law. ND and USC can since they are private. Significantly raising your test scores will make a huge difference.

For UMich, the Africa American freshmen dropped by half after the banning of affirmative act. While for Hispanic students, the impact is much smaller. Around 5% of freshmen are Hispanic each year before and after the banning.
