my grades were low in sophmore year with a dropoff from a 93 to to an 83 in AP Bio and dropping to a 78 in Spanish III Honors, along with minor drops in other classes. This was because I had personal problems in my life. My little 9 yr old brother was SA’ed along with him and my dad being assaulted and being in a messy court case that has made family live so horrible and kept me up at night, along with both my parents not having a job rn. This came along with us thinking my mom had stage 2 cancer and that really sucked too lol. Shes better now but These scenarios kinda made me take a step back and my grades plummeted. How will UT take this into account and how can i make sure they take it as the truth

i also struggling with grades a bit my jr year in the first sem with STEM courses(pre calc, ap stats and ap physics 1) bcus of the ongoing court case

I think anytime you are not 6% - it’s best case a match but likely a reach - but no one can know.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Was your counselor able to note this?

you don’t have to know now - but as a pre-med, it sounds like the school work might not be your strength.

I assume you have Plan B just in case - A&M, Houston, Texas Tech, Arkansas, etc?

I am sorry to hear about the problems that your family has faced. I would speak with your guidance counselor if you are comfortable with that idea- he/she will be able to guide you.

While I cannot state whether you will be accepted to UT Austin, I can say that you appear to be a strong student. If you craft an appropriate list I have no doubt that you will get into a great school.

I do not agree at this point in time that the school work for premed is not a strength for you. You are young, went through (and are still going through) an incredibly difficult time and are still in the top 10-11%. You also have an outstanding SAT score.

You may be premed kinesiology in college, or you may change your mind and decide on another career in the health professions…or something else entirely. You have time to decide and to see how it all pans out in college in terms of grades, interests etc.

In the meantime I would speak with your guidance counselor (if you are comfortable) who can help explain your circumstances and create a list of schools with you. He/she would be able to answer your question about UT Austin.

You are dealing with a lot and I wish you well!

I’m sorry for everything you have gone through! I actually think you have a reasonably good shot at UT. Your desired major is in the School of Education, which has the highest admit rate of all the schools at UT. In addition you are in state, near the top of your class with strong rigor.

Our local (Texas) public school got more than 100 students admitted to UT last year (class size 550, so almost 20 percent of the class admitted). My kids’ private school got 15 percent of the senior class admitted to UT. I know that is not true at all schools, but the point is that a LOT of good in state students get in even if not auto admit, especially to the School of Education. Best of luck - I’m rooting for you!

I’m so sorry for what your family went through.
Hopefully your GC is aware and can make a note in your LoR/GC file.

Your profile is great for kinesiology but 2 caveats : non auto admit is always roll of the dice; kinesiology is a Health Science and is not a proper premed major because the course requirements do not match the science requirements for Med school .

i kinda made myself sound bad in this post, but other than the 2 semesters with the end of my sophmmore year and the beginning of my junior year, i have a 3.94 gpa UW and all 93+ taking the hardest classes possible, so i def feel like school work is one of my strengths.

Good for you. My note was related to the specific classes you called out for large drops which might be tighter to your pre med intention vs others that you noted barely moved.

Hope I’m wrong.

Either way - while I hope you get into UT it’s something you can’t control. You can control you and bring the best you that you can be.

Given the resilience you’ve already shown, I’m sure you’ll be successful no matter where you end up. You matter far more than the where. Best of luck.
